Kalwa of Beaverton, a writer, died of kidney failure Thursday in a Portland Hospital. She was 62. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Peggs, Paxson & Springer Chapel in Beaverton. She was born Nov. 18, 1928 Westmont, IL and lived most of her life in the Midwest. Her maiden name was Allfree. She earned her master's degree from Governor's State University in Park Forest, IL. Mrs. Kalwa wrote several plays including " Those Welfare Blues " and " Social Insecurity " and was active in the drama club of the Alsea-Stuhr Senior Center in Beaverton. She became a Danforth Fellow at the University of Michigan after raising eight children. She moved to Beaverton in 1985. Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Larry, daughters Serena Dinsmore and Carmel Dunham of Portland, Kristina Moran of Salt Lake City and Heidi Deardeauff of Flendenia, Mo; sons, John Lawson of Seattle, David Lawson and Daniel Golz of Columbus, Ohio, and Curtis Lawson of Los Angeles; father John Allfree of Kansas, IL; brothers, David Allfree of Morris Plains, N.J. and Stephen Allfree of Woodland, Calif; and seven grandchildren. Disposition was to be by cremation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Jean Kalwa was born Francis Jean Allfree on November 18, 1928 in Chicago, IL eldest child to John and Carmel Allfree. Three brothers were born after her, David, Bruce and Stephen. She grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from Bowen High School. When she was 12 years old, she won a contest where the prize was a free week at the church camp. The church became very important to her; she planned to be a missionary when she grew up and attended the Northern Baptist Seminary. When she was twenty, she married and moved to Nelsonville, Oh. Jean lived in a tarpaper shack with no running water; she bor six children there, Serena, John, Kristina, David, Curtis and Stephen. Stephen died an infant in that small hamlet. Jean was poor and there were many problems. In 1957, she moved back to Chicago to make a new life for herself and her children in a house on Mackinaw Ave. Here her children grew and she added to her family with four more children, Daniel, Heidi, Carmel and Timothy. Timothy also died as an infant. She now had eight children. Life was difficult; there were a lot of us. Jean and her children grew up in the Chicago area. Together they created nine adults, among them an artist, an engineer, a millwright, an automobile mechanic, a scientist and a police officer. They have inherited the legacy of wit, intelligence and creative effort that Jean was known for. When Jean's youngest children were teenagers, she went back to school, receiving her master's degree with honors in American Studies form Governor's State University at Forest Park, IL. But she wasnt' done yet. In 1976, she applied for and received the prestigious Danforth Fellowship so she could continue her studies in a Ph.D. program at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Mi. Her studies were cut short by illness in 1980. Jean married Lawrence Kalwa in 1968. They were married for almost twenty three years. Her illness in 1980 left her disabled; Larry took care of her until her death. They moved to Portland in 1985. Here, Jean became a writer. Her plays of modern life cover everything form sex and the old person to homelessness. Life was tought for Jean Kalwa, but not wasted. She left a rich legacy from which her survivors have drawn to help them live. Notes for Heber Leroy Oller: The Hammond Times July 28, 1958 Hammond Boy Drowns in Wolf Lake Find Victim In Water 5 Feet Deep 90 Minute Search By Sister, Cousins Ends in Tragedy A Sunday afternoon of fun and frolic for a 12 year old Hammond boy at Wolf Lake Park beach ended in tragedy when he drowned while swimming. The boy, Leroy Oller son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Oller, 4528 Pine Ave, was last seen about 1:30 p.m. when he went into the water at the beach off 121st street, police reported. He had gone to the park earlier with a sister and several cousins. The sister, Sharon, 17 suddenly discovered that her brother was missing and the family party searched the beach at least three times and had him paged over the public address system in the concession stand, officers were told. After lifeguards were motified, the boy was pulled from the bottom of the swimming area about 3 p.m. where the water, according to Hammond Park District officials, is about four or five feet deep. Although Leroy had been subjuect to fainting spells, his father doubted if they led to the mishap. Oller said that for a period of six to eight months about five years ago, Leroy had been suffering from convulsive seisures but "had been perfectly all right" since then. Robert Jacobson, 7622 Walnut Ave., Hammond, one of four lifeguards on duty, administered artificial respiration until the Hammond Fire Department's ambulance squad arrived. They attempted for 30 minutes to revive the boy. Antony F. Remich, 19, of 6412 Moraine Ave., Hammond, another lifeguard, discovered the body and brought it ashore. Dr. Peter Stecy, Lake County coroner, prnounced him dead after revival efforts failed. Besides his parents and sister Leroy is surviced by brothers Lawrence, Victor and Gerald; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Leona Linder, all of Hammond; two half-sisters, Mrs. Ruby Lewis and Mrs. Iniece More About Heber Leroy Oller: Burial: Unknown, Oakhill Cemetery, Hammond, Lake Co, In Cause of Death: Drowned (Wolf Lake) Cemetery Section: Sec. 12 27. By Susan Emery Porter Twp. - Leroy Webdell's love of children shone through in both his personal and professional life. The Porter Township School superintendent, who died earlier this week of a heart attack at age 57, was honored by family, friends and colleagues Friday afternoon at services at Boone Grove High School. More than 300 people packed the gymnasium to pay tribute to the man who had led the schools for the last six years, leading the district through the construction and naming of a new high school. A father of two, stepfather of four, and grandfather of 10, Webdell was a family man whose love of children was one of the main reasons he chose a career in education, said Mark Bates, a cousin of Webdell's widow, Barbara. "He loved to be around young people," Bates said during a personal eulogy. "He used to give them affectionate nicknames." Even after he left the classroom as a teacher and became an administrator, Webdell still remained close to students, Bates said. Struggling to fight back tears, the Schererville attorney described Webdell's other love - that of animals. He had several pets, and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved to eat, Bates said. "The secretaries would call around to all the schools, and the one that was serving cookies is where Leroy would go to have lunch." Porter Township School Board member Mark Langbehn characterized Webdell as a "true leader of the community." His dedication and commitment especially showed during the construction of the new high school on Ind. 2, Langbehn said. The building is now the hub of the community and students are benefiting from technological advancements and numerous new athletic and academic programs, he said. "He gave us a foundation that was strong and sturdy and will live on," Langbehn said. "He taught us pride and how to work through adversity and be patient. "And most important, he taught us to trust each other so we could move forward. Leroy's works will live on and his light will always shine." The hour-long service also featured singing by the Boone Grove High School choir and Scripture readings and prayers from Southlake Christian Church Pastor John Starr. After the service, more than 50 vehicles slowly wound their way down Ind. 2 and U.S. 30 to Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. Webdell was named superintendent in 1990, replacing interim director Karl Speckhard. His career in education spanned 35 years. He served as assistant superintendent and superintendent for Kankakee Valley School Corp. for four years and superintendent of North Judson Schools. Before that, he was a teacher and middle school and high school principal in Lake Station. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, sons, Troy and Michael, stepdaughters, Cindy, Carrie, Cheryl and Christy, and 10 grandchildren. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Webdell dies of heart attack. By Laura Diamond Funeral information Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Boone Grove High School, where Webdell will be available for viewing earlier that day, from 9 to 11 a.m. School will be canceled Friday. Friends may call at Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service, 6360 Broadway in Merrillville, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Porter Twp. - To the shock and sadness of students, faculty members and residents of Porter Township School Corp., Superintendent Leroy Webdell, 57, died early Tuesday morning from a heart attack. Webdell was named superintendent in 1990, replacing interim director Karl Speckhard. During his time with the district, Webdell faced many challenges, the most notable being the construction and naming of the district's new high school. He was also a leader in developing several programs including wrestling, women's softball and soccer, and academic programs like Project Care and Tech Prep. Tuesday morning, members of the Porter Township School Board and central office workers were in shock over Webdell's sudden death. The workers were trying to continue with their daily responsibilities but occasionally tears would fall and employees would stop their work to give one another a comforting embrace. "We are all still in shock and trying to understand what happened," administrative assistant Jenny Hanson said. "He was always so healthy. He was our tough guy who took care of everything and everyone." To console one another, administrators shared their favorite stories about Webdell. Everyone who knew Webdell said he will be remembered for the kindness and insight he provided to all challenges going on in the district and county. Others remembered Webdell for his sense of humor and love of life. Webdell always wore a Santa's hat at the annual office party and would joke that he often physically resembled the jovial man. The same red hat was still hanging in his office Tuesday. Although the board and workers were visibly upset, an emergency executive board meeting was held to determine who would lead the district. Fortunately, the district has completed its budget, but as a rule, it is difficult for school corporations to look for a new superintendent in the middle of a school year. The School Board will continue to meet this week and next to select a temporary replacement and to set up a search process, curriculum director Suzi Peterson said. But the board's main focus Tuesday was to help Webdell's family and to ease the pain of the students. School has been canceled Friday to allow students to attend the funeral. "Our students and staff knew him personally and are in mourning at this sudden and tragic loss," the School Board and administrators said in a press release. "He will be remembered as a strong supporter of our community, our teachers and staffs, administrators and students; as a leader who was able to maintain the role of peacemaker." Webdell was an educator for more than 30 years. He served as assistant superintendent and superintendent for Kankakee Valley School Corp. for four years and superintendent of North Judson Schools. Before that, Webdell served as a teacher, and middle school and high school principal in Lake Station. He was also the current president of the Porter County Education Interlocal board, the county's special and vocational education provider. The county's seven superintendents oversee the Interlocal. Webdell earned his bachelor's degree from Ball State University with a major in biology, his master's degree from Valparaiso University in biology and an Ed.S. from Purdue University. He also received a secondary administration certificate from Indiana University. Webdell is survived by his wife, Barbara. He has two sons, Troy and Michael, four stepdaughters, Cindy, Carrie, Cheryl and Christy, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Boone Grove High School. Earlier in the morning, Webdell's body will be available for viewing at the school. More About Leroy J. Notes for Elizabeth Rae Miller: Five dead in 17 hours Four men, one woman killed in two incidents Published 02/07/2001 10:30:21 PM By Bradley Cole Times Staff Writer HAMMOND -- On the heels of Tuesday night's triple murder, police found themselves staring at another murder scene Wednesday morning. Just minutes before a press conference was scheduled to begin about the murder of three people on 125th Street near Calumet College of St. Joseph, police learned of a double homicide at 4141 Calumet Ave. in the shared parking lot of Johnel's Restaurant and Ramada Inn. As Hammond police detectives split into two teams to cover both cases, Hammond Police Chief John Cory announced that investigators would be receiving help from federal agencies in solving the five murders. "The one thing that I feel is important to note here is certainly any murder or act of violence we cannot accept or tolerate," Cory said. "I would like to assure the community that these acts of violence, the three homicides we had (Tuesday), as well as the two bodies we found (Wednesday) morning, are not random acts of violence. They are calculated, they are done with intent and they're definitely meant for those people who are the victims." As Cory spoke, dozens of detectives pored over a dark green Plymouth minivan that contained the bodies of two men. One of the men was identified as Juan Gonzalez, 33, of the 4000 block of Baring Avenue, East Chicago. At press time, the other man's identity was unknown. Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda was one of the officers on the scene and got a close look inside the van. He said the face of one of the victims was covered with a black stocking cap. Several patrons of the restaurant and of the Ramada Inn stood outside the yellow police tape, too shocked to talk as they tried to comprehend the crush of police around the van. As police held a blue tarp over the van, several officers assisted the Lake County Coroner's Department in removing the bodies from the van. After the bodies were removed, two tow trucks arrived and took the van and a Chrysler Sebring with Illinois license plates away. A woman, who asked to be identified only as Pat, said she came to Johnel's Restaurant to eat and heard the man who apparently discovered the bodies explaining the scene. "He said he just got halfway out of his car, looked in the van, saw the bodies and called the police," she said. "He and I were here at the same time, 10:30 a.m. I pulled up and sat down. The gentleman came in and said, 'There are a couple of bodies out there.' We came outside and he was already calling the cops." Pat said the police responded quickly and asked patrons to move their cars as they began to rope off the area. She said the man who discovered the bodies said they were dead. "I asked the man what he saw and he said it looked like one had his throat slit, because he head was laying back, the other one was slumped over," Pat said. Hoyda said police were trying to determine when the murders occurred. He said police are not sure because there was buildup of snow around the van. A man, who claimed to be the owner of the van, was quickly whisked away by police for questioning. While police were trying to piece together information in the restaurant parking lot, other detectives were continuing to work on the 125th Street murders. Police learned of Tuesday's triple murder from a motorist who reported a possible accident in the 900 block of 125th Street. When officers arrived, they found two of the victims shot to death in a truck that belonged to one of the deceased, police said. Hoyda said a third person found in the truck, Edward Zavala, 53, of the 3000 block of Deodar Street, East Chicago, was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Police were unable to say if Zavala conveyed any information before his death. The other two victims were identified Wednesday as Louis Salvatore Jr., 36, of the 2000 block of Purdue Drive, East Chicago, and Elizabeth Miller, 33, of the 600 block of Briarwood Drive, Dyer. A representative for the Lake County coroner's office said all three died of gunshot wounds. Hammond Police Public Information Officer Christopher Matonovich said police were not prepared to release information about the killings, but said quite a bit of physical evidence was collected at the scene. Police would not say if the five murders were related. Word of the triple murder spread quickly throughout the neighborhood, scaring some nearby residents. "I was very uncomfortable when my husband called me last night and told me what happened," Debbie Jimenez said. "I said not one, not two, but three? Then I had to go home and try to break that news to my 14-year-old daughter and try to make her feel safe." Jimenez said the Robertsdale area of Hammond has been relatively quiet and these murders came as a shock. She said she didn't sleep very well because she was worried that someone may be out on the prowl. Cory said he wanted to ensure the community that his department is "doing everything that we can and more" to solve the murders and ensure the safety of the community and its citizens. He said the department has the support of several federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The five murders brought the city's total for the year to seven. Last year the city had a record 23 murders. The first murder of 2001 took place on Jan. 2, when Ricco Sinks, 25, was shot to death in the 1000 block of Becker Street. Police believe they have a suspect, but no one has been arrested. The second murder of the year occurred on Jan. 3, when DeMario Watkins was shot to death in the 1000 block of Eaton Street. Police are still seeking his killer. Hammond Mayor Duane W. Dedelow Jr., who was in Indianapolis on Wednesday, said he was saddened by the news of the five homicides. "The police are doing everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to justice," Dedelow said. "The city and the Police Department are working together to prevent these things from happening in the future." Jake Jacobs, of the Save Our Neighborhoods anti-crime group in the city, said a greater police presence is needed to stop violence. "Take our detective bureau and put them back in uniform," Jacobs said. "I've been asking for that, I've been begging for that for three years. If we don't see a change in structure, I think we're looking at the tip of the iceberg. "I predicted we'd have 25 to 30 murders last year unless we changed the structure. We had 23 last year, and I think we're in for the same scenario this year. If we don't change what we're doing, we could have 45 murders this year. This started off as a pimple and the pimple has developed into a boil and the boil has become a cancer and now we have a full-fledged epidemic on our hands." Police are asking anyone with information about these two incidents to please call Hammond police detectives at (219) 853-6442. Published 02/08/2001 10:40:41 PM By Bradley Cole Times Staff Writer HAMMOND -- The FBI's Gang Task Force has joined two other federal law enforcement agencies and the Hammond Police Department in the investigation of five killings discovered in a 17-hour period Tuesday and Wednesday, as family members of the victims anxiously await answers. Public Information Officer Christopher Matonovich said detectives are making great headway in both cases. "We've had some excellent leads come in," Matonovich said. "We are actively and aggressively pursuing these leads with the assistance of several federal agencies." Matonovich said the Police Department would not reveal if any of the five victims is a member of or affiliated with a gang. He said the FBI's Gang Task Force Unit was simply another investigative agency lending a hand in the investigation. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms joined the investigation Wednesday. As police continued their investigation, the Lake County coroner's office released the identity of the fifth homicide victim. Eliseo Villarral, 49, was the other person found dead Wednesday in the van in the parking lot at 4141 Calumet Ave. Villarral was found shortly after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in a dark green Plymouth minivan in the parking lot shared by the Ramada Inn and Johnel's Restaurant. The van also contained the body of Juan Gonzalez, 33, of the 4000 block of Baring Avenue, East Chicago. The Lake County coroner's office said both men died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head, but listed their time of death as being 10:56 a.m. Hammond police indicated the men may have been inside the van for a couple of days before they were discovered. A spokeswoman for Lake County Coroner Thomas Philpot, who refused to give her name, said the coroner did not conduct tests on the bodies to determine the exact time of death. "It has been a long-standing practice that we don't do that because there's no way to determine the exact time of death," the woman said. "The tests are not 100 percent accurate." Hammond Police Chief John Cory said police would benefit from knowing the exact time of death in the cases. "That procedure would be very helpful to us in our investigation," Cory said. "The time of the death often plays as much of a part in a murder investigation as the cause of death." Philpot could not be reached for comment. Police are currently unwilling to say if there is a link between the killings of the two men and a triple homicide that left two men and a woman dead 16 blocks away Tuesday. Police learned of Tuesday's triple murder from a motorist who reported a possible accident at 6 p.m. in the 900 block of 125th Street. When officers arrived, they found two of the victims shot to death in a truck that belonged to one of the deceased, police said. A third person found in the truck, Edward Zavala, 53, of the 3000 block of Deodar Street, East Chicago, was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Police did not report if Zavala was able to say anything before he died. The other two victims were identified Wednesday as Louis Salvatore Jr., 36, of the 2000 block of Purdue Drive, East Chicago, and Elizabeth Miller, 33, of the 600 block of Briarwood Drive, Dyer. Miller's family is continuing to reel from the shock of her murder. Her father, Ronald, a former Hammond police detective, received word of her death at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday when the call came from the coroner's office. Elizabeth, or "Beth" as she was known to friends and family, was a mother of two. Her sister, Barbara Smith, described her as a happy-go-lucky person. "There were a lot of things that had promise with her; this was not expected," Ronald Miller said. "I don't know if she was at the wrong place at the wrong time, but I don't understand it." Ronald Miller said it had been approximately two months since he last saw his daughter, a fact that brings him close to tears. She was a twin to her brother, Ed. She is the second child in her family to die. Ronald Jr. passed away in 1995. Ronald Miller said of the Hammond detectives, "They're really trying to do the best they can and are working continuously to solve this." Police are asking anyone with information about either incident to please call Hammond police detectives at (219) 853-6442.
