Ollie,

I finally received the Pension Application file that I requested August 5, 1998. It appears to me that he was at least twice rejected. The last note states that his application does not agree with the records kept by the War Office.

He states in his application of 5 June, 1871 that he was eighty four years, a resident of the County of Mitchel, State of North Carolina and that he married Elizabeth Chambers in October, 1815. He says she died on 7 June, 1857. He volunteered in February, 1813, for six months and was enrolled at Salisbury, NC as a private in Captain George L. Davidson's Company of Artilary belonging to Col. Pearson's 7th Regiment of North Carolina detached Militia, commanded by General Graham. That from Salisbury their command was ordered on to the Indian Nation in Georgia. They reached Ft. Hawkins about the time General Jackson fought the Indians at the battle of the Horse Shoe and after reconnortering the Indian Country for a few months, their command returned to Salisbury where he was paid off and honorably discharged on or about the 1st September, 1813.

He states that he employed a Tillman Blulock to procure his bounty land under the act of March 3, 1855 and gave his army discharge to Mr. Blulock for that purpose, which he alledges was filed in the Pension Office with his application papers and although he never received a land warrant, he now refers to the papers then filed in proof of this claim for pension.

Claudean,
I have not done any research on Mary Ollis Gragg's family and the
information that I have is incidental to my research as to the origins
of her sister Sarah "Barbary" Marinda Ollis. They were both daughters
of John "Swansea" and Elizabeth Chambers Ollis. The information that I
have should be used as starting points in your research and should be
verified as to accuracy as I have not done so.

I received a letter from Frank E. Wise in Nebo, North Carolina in July
1989. He stated that his wife, who he did not name, was a great-grand
daughter of Boston Ollis. He noted in his records that Mary Ollis had
married Major Gragg who died in the Civil War. You might try
researching Civil War records as she probably applied for a pension at
some point. I responded to Mr. Wise's letter but have not heard from
his as we were on divergent paths and I have not made a breakthrough on
the Ollis or Chambers families to communicate to him.

I also communicated with Margaret Heinek of New Carlisle, Indiana in
1989. She was interested in a Mary Emily (or Amily) Ollis who she
thought to be a daughter of Boston and Elizabeth Wiseman Ollis. The
"Avery County Heritage" says that Mary was married to a Wilson from
Mitchell County so she is probably on the right track. Her description
of Boston 2nds Mary Ollis is that she married #1 M. J. Huskins 6 Nov
1862 in Mitchell Co. He died in 1867 and she married #2. James W.
Wilson on 26 January 1868. She had Samuel and William Huskins and
Elizabeth, Jonathan and Robert Wilson. The "Avery County Heritage"
gives this Mary as having a middle name of Ann. Just giving you this
information so that you know that there are two Mary Ollises!

My notes on Mitchell Co. NC 1870 census (film #5931149) dwelling #62
family #62 shows Gragg, Miry 45 female born in NC with children Shelag,
13, male & Eveline, 23, female with Wiseman families living around her
and the Josiah Ollis family close by.

Where the Harvel fits in, I just don't know. My Sarah "Barbary" Ollis
married William Harvell and it was common for one family to marry
another family repeatedly. If you find any further information
regarding either of these families, I would love to hear about it.

Good luck in your search.

Sidney
