5. BARBARY2 OLLIS (SEBASTIAN "BOSTON"1) was born January 01, 1800, and died 1895 in Reynolds Co, MO. She married CHARLES ASHER 1815 in Clinton, Anderson Co, Tennessee9. He was born September 1790, and died January 01, 1868 in Reynolds Co, MO.

"Sally Adams writes:Barbary Ollis Asher is my favorite ancestor. She was born on the first day of the first month of a brand new century, 1 Jan 1800. She was of German extraction, tough, rugged, a pioneer. I see her applying for Charles' war of 1812 pension over and over again, not because she was poor, which she was, but because she thought he'd earned it. She was a fighter. She fought for what she thought was right. She fought for her family. And when she felt that her family had betrayed her trust, she fought the family. Whether or not she really felt that George F. C., her late son, had "fraudulently and wickedly" taken her land from her, she said that and sued her grandchildren for the land, and won. I have a feeling she may have not approved of her daughter-in-law Martha's choice for a second husband, Urban Sumpter. That could have provoked a lawsuit.I have heard that she was called "Money". I can only say that I bet no one called her that to her face, unless she liked it. Barbary and Charles took care of her aged parents, who lived with them in Tn. Then after they moved to Mo, they cared for her mother who lived to be over 103 years of age. After her mother died, Charles' parents moved in with them, both of them living to be over 100 also. Most of her life was spent caring for children or parents. Barbary and Charles were not good with dates. They really didn't need to reckon time by a calendar. Life was much simpler then. They reckoned time by births and marriages and deaths, and if they said Sally was b. in 1821, and the census says something else, it just means they didn't live by a calendar, like we do. Barbary said in one legal paper that Charles died "sometime in the latter part of Jan or early part of Feb 1867, the exact date not recollected." A few months later, in a different paper, she said "Charles died 18 Jan 1867". When did he die? I know I've seen 1868 on some papers, but I'd probably go with the 1867 date myself, though I really don't know how much it matters. The courthouse burned in 1872, along with his will, so we'll never know what it said. Barbary and Charles each gave a deposition for the pension papers of Boston Ollis, her father. They each stated that James Asher, "Jamey", was their firstborn child. Barbary's mother stated in her deposition that James was their oldest son. So we have three legal depositions as to his parentage, more than any other Asher that I am aware of. Let's stop those rumors that say he's not their son. They said in the deposition that the names and birth dates for their family were written in the first two pages of a small book, which was also submitted as evidence. The first two pages say:"Charles
Asher was b. Sep the first (unreadable) 90. Barbary Asher was b. Jan the first, in the year 1800. James Asher was b. Feb the ninth, 1816.Jacob Asher was b. Oct the twenty seventh day, in the yr 1818. Sally Asher was b. july the fifteenth 1821.George Asher was b. the twenty fifth Jun in the yr 1833."I'll be the first to admit they had problems with dates, but I do believe they knew who their children were. No, I don't know where Lova belongs, or John, but one place they're not is in the book. It's evident Charles and Barbary raised other kids besides their own, like Jane Morris and Margaret Parker...and Lova and John. Barbary lived to be 95 or 96 yrs old. Too bad she didn't hang on for a few more so she could have seen the beginning of this century too."

Notes for G
EORGE OLLIS:
On the 1850 census George is 44 NC, Nancy 37 TN. I believe this was a second marriage for George, since he has 3 teenagers in his household.

In 1850 Roane, in household #1450 is George Ollis 44 NC, wife Nancy 37. Their children are Sarah 15, Rily 13 and Barbary 19, all born TN I have no other significant records on OLLIS, but on the surface it appears this George Ollis is probably the same George of the 1830 and 1840 census, and has his three daughters by previous marriage with him.

"Roane County, TN Divorces 1807-1900" by Robert L. Bailey

GEORGE OLLIS vs TABITHA OLLIS outcome not known 1 Jan 1869 George and Tabitha were married about July 1860 in Roane County, and lived together about 2 months and a half, when she deserted him. Rumored she has committed adultery with divers person. ..Thomas Smith, James McCrary, and
WILLILM LISLES.

NANCY OLLIS VS WM. OLLIS dismissed 15 Apr 1890 She asks to have petition dismissed.

NANCY OLLIS vs WM. OLLIS 22 Apr 1894 Charge: cruel and inhuman treatment; adultery with one Cordia Edwards. The complainant was restored to her maiden name of NANCY SILVEY and to have
exclusive custody and control of her three children by said marriage-MARY ELIZABETH , JOHN FRANCIS G. and SAMUEL G. OLLIS. All three tender infants.

Married August 1884 in Roane Co. [In 1870, next door to Mollie Ollis 65, is Pop Edwards 40, with a Dellila C. age 1, in the household.]

Perhaps this William Ollis is the 4-year old William in household of MOLLIE OLLIS 65, in 1870 Roane.??

Could George have married first Betsy Russell in 1830, then Nancy Silvey in 1843, and then
Tabitha X in 1860?

Could this be William Ollis, born about 1866, probably grandson of Daniel Ollis, and Nancy Silvey born about 1866, daughter of Capt. Samuel and his second young honey? Need to look at later records to see what name kids had.

I think I don't care anymore, at least for today. :-)

2 Nancy Silvey b: Abt. 1813 in TN d: Bef. 1860
+George Ollis b: 01 Feb 1802 in NC m: 07 Mar 1843 in Roane Co. TN
Father: Boston Ollis (Rev. War soldier) Mother: Barbara

George Ollis m Betsy Russell, 11 May 1830

Census: 1840 Roane, George Ollis 000/001-12

1850 Roane #1480
George Ollis 44 NC
Nancy [Silvey] 37
Sarah 15
Riley 13
Barbary 19

I can't figure this out. In 1840, George had 3 girls. Perhaps one married before 1850? The child, Riley age 13, is not accounted for in 1840, so I'm wondering if he could be William Riley Silvey--a kinsman of Nancy?????

Looks like Nancy was deceased before 1860. One can only wildly speculate about these other girls.

1860 Roane 14th District, 24 August #2038-1889
George Ollis 52 NC
Barbary 30
Polly 27
Sarah 24
Sarah E. 2
Betsy J. 1

Next door to Samuel Silvey 69 and Jane 69

So who is Polly 27? We have two Sarahs. Assuming George would not name two daughters Sarah, even if by different wives, perhaps the two young girls are grandchildren?

Mary E. Ollis m. Carrick Edwards in 1849. He was a Civil War casualty. She is NOT daughter of George, it would appear.

2 NANCY SILVEY b: Abt. 1800
+Matthew Gardenhire m: 02 Jul 1826 in Roane Co. TN

Census: 1830 Roane 100/01-100/011

This is pure conjecture. This couple does not appear in later Roane records, and probably moved away from Roane. No effort to track them down yet. No record of Security or Bondsman. Another Nancy Silvey, born abt 1813, marries George Ollis in 1843 Roane. I think she would be daughter of Samuel Sr., so don't think they would name two daughters Nancy
