Notes for B
OSTON OLLIS:
AKA: Boss," Uncle Mack" Wiseman

Sometime around 1858 - 1860 Boston left his family and went to Missouri. His reasons for going to Missouri are not known. Some people feel that he might have gone on a business trip, maybe to ship or buy cattle or goods. Perhaps he went because of the gold rush or to visit someone. In the last letter Elizabeth received from him, he said to tell Joe (his son) to be a good boy and he would bring something back to him. No one knows what happened to him, but he never returned to his home. Elizabeth died in 1889 and is buried at Pine Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Spruce Pine.
His family must have had difficult times after Boston went to Missouri. In 1861 the Civil War broke out and several of his sons enlisted in the Confederate Army. His son Joe was a young lad when he joined the Home Guard. The Union Army captured Joe and some other boys near Linville Falls. The Yankees had killed one of the boys and while they were rounding the others up into a group, Joe saw his chance to escape and he slipped away. He went down Plumtree Creek and over Doe Hill on to his home at Brushy Creek. The next day he made his way to Yancey County where he hide out for a while and met Kate Buchanan who would later become his wife.
