55. II JAMES W⁴ OLLIS (JAMES WESLEY³, JOHN SWANSEA², SEBASTIAN "BOSTON"¹) was born April 14, 1861. He married (1) MARY BUCHANAN. He married (2) SIS HOLDEN.

Notes for II JAMES W OLLIS:
      The story of this branch of the Ollis family begins with a most unusual incident, or maybe a quirk of fate. Call it what ever you wish, we must tell the story as it was related by his father.
      Mr. James Wesley Ollis, II went courting at the home of William Marion Buchanan. He became engaged to Laura Buchanan, Williams's daughter. For some reason, Laura's father decided that Mr. Ollis should not marry his daughter, so on the day sat for the wedding Mr. Buchanan locked Laura in her room. Now, it so happened that Laura had a good-looking sister named Mary. She watched for Mr. Ollis to come get his bride. When she saw him coming, she slipped out of the house and met him at the spring house. She told him that her father had Laura locked up and therefore he couldn't marry her. James looked Mary in the eyes and said, "You know, I think about as much of you as I do Laura, Let's get married!"
      James and Mary went to the home of Tillman McCoury, who was magistrate, and were married. They slipped back home (Mary's home) and spent the night. The following morning Mr. Ollis went to work, cutting timber and left Mary home. In the meantime, Mr. Buchanan saw the license sticking out of his coat pocket. After examining it, he found out he had married Mary on Laura's license. By this time, he knew they had spent the night together. He sent after Mr. Ollis AT ONCE! He told him he must marry his daughter legally. And so Mr. Ollis did.
      Mary's sister Laura died an old maid, but she had deep devotion for her sister Mary as long as she lived.
      James and Mary had twelve children, three of whom died in childhood, the other nine living to adulthood and rearing families of their own.
      James (Uncle Jim or "Pap") lived to be in his eighties. When Mary died in her forties, he married Sis Holden. Mary fell dead while putting supper on the table. Sis was a mother to the younger children, Hallie and James III. "Pap" and Sis had one child, Hazel, born in 1923. She married William Calhoun and is still living. All six of the boys' wives are still living. The six boys and Minnie and Docie are deceased.
