Notes for J
AMES HOWE, L:
I received the following information in a copy of a D.A.R. application from Amy Batchelder of Alexandria, VA
According to the D.A.R., office of the Registrar General there are nine other applications using James Howe as the Revolutionary Ancestor. Amy will check at the D.A.R. library to ascertain who these other applicants were.
This applicant was Marjorie Wright Morris, a descendant through Daniel Radcliffe Howe. The national number is 671747.

Ancestor's services:
The said James Howe who resided during the American Revolution at Richmond County, Virginia assisted in establishing American Independence, while acting in the capacity of Private.
He enlisted in March 1781 and served three months as a substitute for brother-in-law William Jones. He served under Lt. Kelsick and Capt. George Harrison and in Colonel Nelson's Virginia regiment. He enlisted in July 1781 and served three months as substitute for his brother Thomas How, as a private in Capt. Samuel Fauntleroy's Virginia Cp. About Oct. 1, 1781 he enlisted and served two months as a private in Capt. Northam or Kelsick's company and was at the seige of Yorktown. He was allowed a pension, Oct. 3, 1832, then living in Warren Co., Ohio. Wars Section EEL-Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Pensions, Claim W7765.

References to documentation for military record:
Pension paper mentioned above W7765
"Historical Registrar of Virginians in the Revolution" by Gwathmey, p. 39
"Pensioners Residing Outside of Virginia in 1835, whose pensions were granted for services as Virginia Militiamen during the Revolutionary War" by McAllister, p. 276 lists James Howe as 72 years old and living Warren Co., Ohio.
United States Pension Records of 1835, Vol. lll, p. 165.
Eckenrode's List of Soldiers of Virginia p. 156: DAR Patriot Index p. 34

In one of the DAR's publication is this statement:

Richmond Co VA & he lived there at enl & also srv as a sub for his bro Thomas Howe & about 1821 he moved from VA to Warren Co OH & he appl there 3 Oct 1832 and so d there 19 Mar 1838, sol had m Margaret "Peggy" Dean 6 Jan 1803 in Frederick Co. VA, wid appl 2 Jun 1853 Clinton Co OH

Is this the James Howe listed as being buried in "Seceder Cemetery" in Warren County, Illinois, in Abstracts of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, Vol. 2?

Notes from material in possession of Frederick Brinkmann of Palo Alto:
James Howe enlisted from Richmond in March 1781 and served three months in the Revolutionary War as a substitute for his brother-in-law William Jones as a private under Lt. Kelsick and Capt. George Morrison in Col. Nelson's Virginia Regiment.
Although the Howe Genealogy and the notes of Fred Brinkmann (probably based on the Howe Genealogy) include a John Howe among the children of James Howe l the D.A.R. application of Marjorie Wright Morris does not include a John. The John Howe in the Howe Genealogy as the son of James Howe l is the John, son of James Howe ll [note wife's name and number of children in Howe Genealogy]
