Descendants of Washington Olney

Generation No. 1

1. WASHINGTON1 OLNEY was born January 03, 1804 in Ohio1, and died September 27, 1885 in Mineral Point, Iowa Co., Wisconsin. He married MARY RHODA HOOKER January 08, 1835 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, IL2, daughter of IRA HOOKER and SARAH TAYLOR. She was born August 13, 1813 in Hadley, Saratoga County, New York3, and died August 16, 1855 in Iowa County, WI4.

Notes for W
ASHINGTON OLNEY:
Washington Olney was among the earliest settlers in the Iowa/Lafayette county area of southern Wisconsin. In the Beers book on Iowa County, Wisconsin, history, p. 653, he is listed among those who made entries for the first survey of the county, prior to September 30, 1837. On page 771 of the same book he is on a voter registration list for September 1838. In an assessment roll (in the Wisconsin room at Platteville, University of Wisconsin) he is listed as owning 280 acres. His name appears in a book I located in the Newberry Library, entitled THE DIARY OF A CIRCUIT RIDER, which was the diary of Henry Howe, compiled by Jessie Howe Nebelthau (Henry Howe's grandaughter). He apparently lived in the same community of Willow Springs, a lead mining and farming community between Calamine and Mineral Point. In August of 1995 we (Bob and Joan Olsson) found his grave/tombstone in Graceland Cemetery in Mineral Point. It is located in section C-2 under a large old tree. It is one of the oldest grave markers in the cemetery.
In Howe's book mention is made of him and his daughter Mary Ann Olney several times. The entry for June 3, 1866 says, " W. Olney confessed his faith and will be baptized next Sunday. Possibly two of his daughters with him."

In The Black Hawk War [977.3]; edited by William K. Alderfer, State Historian; compiled and edited by Ellen M. Whitney; Illinois State Historical Library: Washington Olney is listed under three entries:

p. 66

"Company of Captain Robert H. McDows company of the first Regiment of mounted Volunteers of the state of Illinois commanded by Colonel D. Leib. Employed in the Service of the United states by order of the Governor and commander-in-chief of the Militia of Illinois from the 17th of June 1831 to 2d day of July 1831, the of its disbandment and discharge at Rock Island 188 miles distant from the company Rendezvous."

p. 366

Company of Captain William Gillam. Muster roll of Capt. Wm. Gillam's Co. of Mounted Volunteers called and mustered into service...attached to the first Regt. of the third Brgd. under the command of Brigadier Generall (sic) James D. Henry from the thirtieth day of April 1832...Washington Olney, Private, Enrolled April 30, 1832, in Morgan County (IL) "Taken on Wagoner--absent since [?] June the 19th, 1832....mustered out at Fort Wilborn, Illinois river this first Day of August 1832."

Fort Wilborn was 200 miles from Morgan County.

p. 367

"Corp. Isaac Graton was listed as a private on June 2 and Washington Olney, whom Graton succeeded, was the corporal on that date."

Notes for M
ARY RHODA HOOKER:
In the 1850 census, the only federal census in which Mary appears, her birthplace is given as New York. On later censuses in which her children give her birthplace it is given as Ohio and Illinois.
Mary Rhoda Hooker was the daughter of Ira Allen Hooker and Sarah Taylor. A book has been written about her family by Marguariete Overholser of Oregon. Title of the book: "A Man is a Man--A Hooker Family Saga"; published by Binford and Mort Publishing, P.O. Box 91580, Portland, OR, 97291; Phone: 503-844-4960. Price: approx. $20 plus shipping. I have purchased this book and now have a good deal of her ancestry back to the original immigrant Joseph Hooker.
