Notes for Wilhelm Gottfrid (Willie) Johnson:
Per Marilyn Olson-Burns April, 2000:Wilhelm was referred to as " Willie" by his family and "Bill" by his friends. He was born in Rollinsville, CO and delivered by his father, Charlie (Karl Lars Gottfrid). He was the second of Ida's five children. The Baptism records at Bethany Lutheran church give Wilhelm's middle name as Gunnar. His brother Harry's middle name was actually Gottfrid. The two got their middle names reversed at some point.By the time Irene, the youngest, was born in 1926, Willie and his brothers had all left home.Willie graduated from Montrose High School and attended a business school. He worked at a gas station after he left home for a short time.He met and married Rose Holzmeister. They lived in Monte Vista, CO during the 1950s.They never had children of their own, but spent a lot of time with his brother Harry's children, Pat and Mike Johnson. They had a farm and raised potatoes.Willie was involved in the Monte Vista Potato Growers Association, eventually rising through the ranks to become its manager. He gave up the farm and they moved to town. After his retirement, he and Rose bought a house at 351 Main Street in Montrose, CO, where he lived until his death in 1994.Willie was very involved in the Masons and several affiliated fraternal orders.
When my children were small, Uncle Willie would often come to Denver to visit. He stayed with his sister Helen and went to my son Adrian's little league football and baseball games. My daughter, Myia, also played baseball and Willie was very impressed with her sports and how she organized and dealt with day to day life.He and Uncle Harry, his brother, remodeled my house at 2670 South Williams, by enclosing the patio and adding 2 bedrooms.Willie had a gruff exterior, but a heart of gold.He loved to fish.He took my kids fishing with him at Santa Maria Reservoir on the western Slope of Colorado. When he passed away, my kids and I bought fishing lures and put them in his casket with him.. I think there surely should be fishing in heaven for Uncle Willie! He is buried at Valley Lawns Cemetery in Montrose, Colorado. His grave is to the south of the statue in the center section.
