Chattanooga, Hamilton, TennesseeTo Josephine MayDied:January 12, 1913… Sacramento, CABeruca grew up in Southern Indiana, one of seven brothers.They were reported as being a scrappy bunch, as was the next generation.Beruca served in the Civil War on the Northern Side.Beruca was very religious.As custom at that time, he strictly enforced the Sabbath with his family.On Sunday, you went to Church all morning, and didn’t work or play.You came home and ate a meal that had been prepared the day before, then settle down in the living room to listen to Beruca read the Bible until sundown.Women were not allowed to cut their hair, and Beruca wore a full beard. He was postmaster of Clarksburg, Indiana and a Justice of the Peace.At the turn of the century, he moved to be near his adult children that had settle around Riverside, California. He died in Sacramento while visiting his daughter.Every time I go to Riverside, I have to correct the cemetery records that insist on listing him as Bernice.Most of Beruca’s family is buried near him. |
