Notes for Ernest Preston Oney:Ernest Oney was born in Moorehead, Ky on 5 May 1896.He moved from Kentucky to Shiloh, Ohio with his family when he was about six months old.
He left school when he was about 16 and worked in Ashland, Ohio at the Meyers Pump Works (his brother Roscoe also worked there) until the family moved to Wellington, Ohio.. He was living at 220 North Main St. in Wellington when he was drafted for the First World War. Sometime in the 1940s this house was torn down and the place is now)occupied by the Oberlin Savings Bank.
His Army Serial nuber was 1935444.He first went to Camp Sherman near Chillicothe, Ohio, where he was initially assignrd to Headquarters Co, 329th InfantryRegiment of the 83rd Division, the Ohio National Guard. This regiment was commanded by a Wellington resident, Lt. Col. Jim McDermott . This camp, of course, no longer exist and at least part of the area is now a parking lot. He was then sent to Europe with the Third Division, nicknamed "The Rock of the Marne." He was assigned to Headquarters Co., 38th Infantry Regiment on July 21st 1918. (He had landed in Europe on 29 May 1918) andserved in the St. Mihiel Offensive, the Meuse-Argonne offensive and the Vesle Sector. He was also detached at one pointto the Third Army Corps Observation Group wherehe "faithfully and most creditably performed his dutiesoften under heavy artlllery and machine gun fire."He remained in Germany after the Armistice in the Army of Occupation until May 1919.He was as Niedermendig and for several years after the war he exchanged Christmas cards with the woman in whose house he was billeted.
He returned to the US on the "George Washington" and was dischargedJune 1, 1919. He worked on the railroad as did his father, his younger brother Roscoe and his maternal uncle Ernest Giesman.
Ernest was the Yardmaster in 1930, according to a city directory of that date but as a result of the depression which started in 1929, he eventually lost his job. For several years he worked at various jobs including one in Spencer, Ohio, for a short time. The family moved to Spencer but spent only a summer there. After returning to Wellington he worked at the Sterling Foundry for many years and later at the Kasper Foundry in Elyria where he was working when he died.
He was active in the American Legion Post, in those days called the Morgan-Dirlam Post #8 after two Wellington men who had been killed in the War.He was also active in the Christian Church and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
