One evening a woman called at his home asking for protection and saying that she was being followed by an unknown man. Patrick offered to go with the woman even though he was not on duty. Patrick went out into the dark night and was never seen or heard from again! His wife was sure he had been killed, for one morning being "whether asleep or awake" she saw him sitting in front of the kitchen stove with his stocking feet on the open oven door. This tale was passed on to their children and retold to the grandchildren.
