| On 22 March 1866, the Chinese gold miner James Hang Hein married Esther Pickthorne, the daughter of Bristish convicts William Pickthorne and Mary Moore, at Maryborough in Queensland. Their marriage certificate reveals that the name Hang Hein was recorded in the Anglicised form of James Ongheen. James and Esther later moved to the gold fields at Calliope where their three children Mary, Rose Anna and James Jr. were all born. When James Ongheen died his wife Esther remarried another member of the the local Chinese community by the name of Hong Chuey (later Anglicised to Thomas Ahchay) thereby establishing an historical connection with the Ahchay family. Although research into China has been unsuccessful to date efforts are continuing. I will gladly share and exchange information which has been gathered on the Ongheen family. |
