In 1643 Clement Onley arrived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, now called Onley Virginia in Accomack County. The town was not named in his honor but for a house called Onley built by his later ancestors. The third generation John Onley left Onley for Chowan County, North Carolina. Edward Onley son John Onley left for Tennessee. John son John became a Captain in the Confederate Army 4th Tennessee Volunteers Infantry. Some of Johns' sibling migrated to Texas.My Great Great Great Grand Father Thomas H. Onley served in the 61st Vinginia Infantry throughout the War. Thomas served as a Provost Guard with Lees' Army at Appomattox Cout House. Thomas was poroled at Appomattox.
