| The author of this document, Richard Arlen Opseth is the Great Grandson of Hans Martin Opseth (Paulshagen) and Grandson of Ole Hans Opseth. Hans was the son of Ole Gudmundsen (Gudmund's son) Berger and Marte Hansdatter(Hans' daughter) Hoversdalen. Hans and Marte owned Pålshaugen farm near Grinda where Hans was born in 1844. Hans rented a room at Pålshaugen farm in 1867 and Married Gurine Gundersdatter Tårnberg. Hans and Gurine later bought and moved to Myrvold farm also near Elverum where they gave birth to 6 children. Ole Hans (b. 1867), Johan Hans (b. 1868), Gudbrand (b. 1870), Martin Hans(b. 1877), Helge (b. 1879), and Hanna (b. 1881). When Hans left Norge (Norway) around 1885 or 1886, his name was Hans Olsen Pålshaugen (Norsk spelling). The surname was the name of the farm on which he was born, Pålshaugen, and the middle name Olsen, (Ole's son), from his father's first name, and Hans his first name from his maternal grandfather, Hans Hansen Teppen. When Hans arrived in Madison Minnesota he had changed the name to Hans Martin Oppset(second p dropped and h added later). This name appears to have come from his maternal side of the family. The following assumption is made based on what is known about his ancestors in Norway. His Mothers name was Marte (thus Martin and the name of one of his sons). Hans Hansen Teppens' was Hans' maternal grandfather. His brother, Ole had a daughter named Karen who married Jens Oppset. In Norway Opset, Oppset, and Oppseth are all the same with the modern spelling being Oppseth or Opseth. So based on this circumstantial evidence, I feel he chose the name Hans Martin Oppset(h) based on maternal favoritism. Hans remarried shortly after reaching Madison. He married a Norwegian woman that arrived in Madison about the same time as he did 1886. Her name was Kari ?, born 1847 in Brudvik Norway. Little is known about her at this writing. It is known that she gave birth to 3 children both who died in early childhood and she died of severe cramps (Newspaper Notice) in November of 1906. Hans'descendants in the U.S. spelled his Norsk surname as Paulshagen. Early english phonic sounding of Norsk spelling of Pålshaugen probably producing the spelling Paulshagen. This may be the explaination for U.S. spelling. The records that have been discovered in Norway spell the name as Pålshaugen phonically pronounced Pohl-shaugen (au=ow) in English. The English spelling in Norsk means Paul's Garden (hagen is garden). In Norsk, "haugen" means hill. Older Norsk spelling of Pålshaugen would be to use a double a (aa) in place of the modern å. Paal is for the apostle Petrus. This would indicate a religious naming and a geographic description of the Pålshaugen ("Petrus Hill") farm of Ole and Marte. In the years to follow Ole Hans, Johan Hans, Gudbrand, and Martin Hans would also follow their father to the town of Madison Minnesota and take the surname of Opset(h) as theirs. Hans' wife Gurine and the 2 youngest(Helge and Hanna) children would remain in Norway. Emigration lists for the U.S. in 1890 list Hans' son Ole Opseth arriving from Elverum Norway. It is unclear at this time if Ole Hans would have had the surname of Hansen or not when he left Norway. Record show that Ole arrived in the U.S.A. using the surname of Opseth. Hans and his 4 sons were skilled craftsmen. The skills of Hans and his 4 sons helped to construct many of the original stone and masonry buildings in the town of Madison Minnesota which was founded in 1885. For clarity of the family tree and elimination of confusion I have given the surname of Pålshaugen to Han's direct Norway ancestors. Starting with Hans U.S. decendants the surname becomes Opseth. If anyone has information in support of or contradicts this information, I would appreciate hearing from you. Many thanks to Steve Opseth in Duluth MN and Odd Bjølseth in Elverum Norway for their help in developing the contents of this document. |
