All: John Delaney Gann was instrumental in having Angelina County created by the Texas legislature from Nacadoches County. He was the first clerk of the Angelina County Court from 1846 to 1850.--"Nathan Ignatious Gann..." book, page 245.

BURIAL: He was buried on his own land at Jack Creek, Texas. Exact location of grave is unknown today.--Gann book, page 246

BIOGRAPHY: By 1860, John D. Gann was the third largest landowner in Angelina County. The 1860 census showed his real estate valued at $6,200. He raised cotton, cattle and hogs on his land. Around 1860, he built a new cabin, which stands about 10 miles west of Lufkin. It is marked as an historic site by the Texas State Historical Commission.

MILITARY: 1838-Cordovan Rebellion-Texas-on muster roll of Capt.William M. Keeling, a company of infantry. John served as a rivate from Aug.9, 1838 to Aug.23, 1838. Soon after 1860,John joined the Army of the Confederacy.

DEATH: While home of furlough, recuperating from "white swelling" in his leg (tuberculosis of the joints), John was the victim of an attack by nightriders. Dragged from his home, he was found dead two days later, hanging from a tree by Jack Creek. He died 19 January 1864.--Gann Book-page 246
