FAULKNER BARLOW MANSFIELD
I attended the Coats-Rowletts reunion that was hosted in Louisville, Kentucky August 2005. While I was there, different people came up to me and gave me hugs, kisses and asked about my parents.I felt extremely embarrassed and out of place."Who are these people?" I asked my cousin. She laughed and said, "They are your family."After that moment, I decided to start documenting our family history. I want to first thank everyone that has helped with puttingthis information together. The narrative of this website is based upon written document and some word of mouth, which I would try to distinguish between the two. Like most researchers, I have hit brick walls. Not only could I not retrieve the information needed through documents, but from the living ancestors who will not devulge any information.Where else do you turn when things are not going as planned? You've guessed it.I got down on one knee, seeing the other one I had surgery on, and I said a prayer to God.He has blessed me in so many ways.I still want and need help from those who have information for me, but God has given me an assignment that I must accept. With God, all things are possible.Doing genealogy does not mean, digging up the dirt that Uncle Jim was a drunk or Cousin Sam stoled a horse. It is about accountability.Having all of our relatives accounted for.Our ancestors did what they did and we do what we do.It is all in the past. However, since they are not with us in flesh, we must not forget them in spirit. So in all, I am excited to know about where I came from and I am learning, especially dealing with health issues, where my family has been. "In all of us there is a hunger, narrow deep, to know our heritage-to know who we are and where we have come from." -Alex Haley. Here has it all began: Josephine Mansfield, which is unknown if that was her married name or maiden, was born around 1830 in either Kentucky or Virigina.Being that I could not find her in the 1900 census, I am assuming she died by then. She had at least two children: Jerry Mansfield and Mary Mansfield. GENERATION I Jerry P. Mansfield was born around 1845.He was born into slavery for the Mansfield family of Hart County. In August 1908, Jerry was killed by a train. The details of this 'accident' is still a mystery. In 1872, he wed Fanny Perry. She was the daughter of Patrick Perry and Hannah Hodge. To this union, 12 children were born: William, William Allen, Matilda, Jerry Jr., Harrison, Lydia, Hannah, Green William McKinley, Peter Winfred, Sadie, F.P., and unknown. Mary Mansfield was born around 1853.It is unknown of her whereabouts before 1880.According to her tombstone, she died in 1942. Around 1871, she married Charles Sterrett and 11 children were born into this union: Henry Thoms, Joseph, unknown, Lilly, Milly, Zachariah, Clara, Julie, Charlie, Blanch, and Josephine.
