He was born 22 November 1835 in Llandrinio Montgomeryshire Wales, and died 7 January 1891 in Awapuni NZ. Notes for JANE GOURLAY: Jane & Edward fostered 2 children, 1 was Herbert West Hunt the other we think was her sisters child Helen Campbell Christie who married James Blyth. James parents were James and Ann. James and Ann built Waterdale in Wanganui. Helens dates: 1865 - 1942 James dates: 1843 - 1911 They had 2 children: James Vaughan and May Notes for EDWARD VAUGHAN: For some reason, Edwards sister Sarah, came to visit Edward in New Zealand, around 1880. She drove herself to the Vaughan house, and stopped to ask directions of a woman and her young daughter as to the whereabouts of the Vaughan home. "I am Mrs Vaughan", Jane told her, "My daughter and I are going to Church, we shall return presently". We can verify this from the fact Sarah was absent from the 1881 census. When Jane and Martha jnr returned from Church, Sarah had left, a very short visit for such a long journey. We still do not know why Sarah chose to visit her brother, spend only 2 or so hours with him and leave again. We can only surmise that she was asking Edward to come back and take over Trederwen Hall, as within 10 years Richard Morgan was the owner of the Hall. Child of JANE GOURLAY and EDWARD VAUGHAN is: 5. i. MARTHA ISABELLA5 VAUGHAN, b. 3 August 1875, Lower Hutt; d. 1967, Whakatane. Generation No. 5 5. MARTHA ISABELLA5 VAUGHAN (JANE4 GOURLAY, ROBERT3, KATHARINE2 RUSSELL, WILLIAM1) was born 3 August 1875 in Lower Hutt, and died 1967 in Whakatane. She married GEORGE ALEXANDER HILL 25 April 1894 in All Saints Church Palmerston North, son of JOHN HILL and CATHERINE LYNCH. He was born 14 November 1859 in Fendalton Christchurch, and died 27 July 1932 in Wellington. Notes for MARTHA ISABELLA VAUGHAN: the story of Martha and Georges' marriage ending in divorce goes thus: When George who was an alcoholic addicted to gin, gambled away the family home for the second time, Martha left him. She never re-maried and became profoundly deaf speaking only in a whisper. Neither Ruby nor Martha ever mentioned the subject of the divorce - it was taboo. Martha then moved to live with her mother at Church St East from 1905 - 11 and after tht with her at 34 Princess St. By 1919 Martha and Rubys address is 36 Princess St and there is no mention of Jane Vaughan. Martha died in Whakatane and is buried there. In an old Bible Martha had, she wrote: This Bible belonged to my father Edward Vaughan when a boy at Grammar School in Wales. I, his daughter, now in my 89th year. Aso written in the Bible, 6/7/1856, died, Thomas Whittingham, gentleman. in the parish of Llandrinio buried in the vault of Edward Vaughan Esq his brother in law according to his own wishes. The Rev Geo Sheffield Head Master of Deytheur Grammar School officiated. Thomas was late of Rhos Royal Farm The Bible was given to Edward on his confirmation day. Notes for GEORGE ALEXANDER HILL: Martha divorced George around 1900 after he had gambled their house away, for the 2nd time. Ruby, their daughter very rarely saw her father, and when she did, he always made promises he would never keep. When Georges' father died, he left Ruby her fathers substantial share in his will, which Martha used to pay off Georges' gambling debts and to provide Martha and Ruby with a home. George, the first child of John and Catherine is the one we know least about. He was born at his parents residence, Fendall Town and bapt at St Peters Church Riccarton on 8 January 1860. By the time to two family photos were taken in the 1890's George was missing as he was farming in Palmerston North. At the age of 34 he married 18 yr old Martha Isabella (Pattie) Vaughan at the local Anglican church of All Saints on 25/4/1894. Georges brother Fred was a witness so he did keep in touch with brothers Fred and Harry both of whom were farming there also in the 1890's. George was a ratepayer on Town Section 74 in Broad St and Section 317, the farm of 25 acres at Awapuni, from 1893 to 1900. In 1893 he described himself as manager and on the next two electoral rolls as farmer. By 1902 be has disappeared. Martha and George separated when Ruby was almost 5, in the 1899 election there is a Martha Isabella Hill Hokowhitu domestic duties residential, and in 1902 the same except she is living in Main St. When Ruby married Theodore Nicholas Dahl at St Andres Presbyterian church on 1/6/1920, George is not described as deceased but his occupation was given as Labourer. In John Hill's will nine children all received some mention but there was no reference to George other than that his daughter Ruby was to receive £200 on the death of Johns wife Catherine. The impression is that George was regarded as the Black Sheep. In 1928 he is listed as a labourer living in central Wellington and he died on 27/7/1932 at Wellington Hospital. He was buried in the Karori Cemetary. More About GEORGE ALEXANDER HILL: Fact 1: 8 January 1860, Baptised Child of MARTHA VAUGHAN and GEORGE HILL is: 6. i. RUBY GEAN6 HILL, b. 23 March 1895.
