Head: George Lundie chronicled history with his journals.
By: JOYCE EINIKIS
VALPARAISO - Although George Lundie never used his degree from Indiana State University to teach English, he honed his writing skills over the years with his journal keeping. "He was quite a historian who loved to read and write," Deborah Jaggers-Baccino, his daughter said. His collection of journals, covering the last 20 years, will be wonderful for the grandchildren to look back on in the future.
"Every month I would get a chronological history of everyday events comparing the present day with the past from him," Jaggers-Baccino said. He also used his writing ability to help others draft well-written letters when needed.
His eldest granddaughter seems to have inherited some of that talent for writing as well. Traveling to this area for the funeral, the 12-year-old composed a beautiful poem about her grandfather.
An avid reader who read everything he could get his hands on, he was reading "The Royals", a novel about Queen Elizabeth, when he passed away. He had a terrific sense of humor, was always a positive person and enjoyed joking around. "We are very fortunate to have experienced such a unique person in our lives," Jaggers-Baccino said.
Mr. Lundie worked primarily in safety, saving lives and preventing injuries, his daughter said. He spent the last 13 of his 35 years of service with Inland Steel Company as Director of Safety and Plant Protection. He also was involved with various civic organizations including the United Way.
A golfer until a back injury forced him to quit, Mr. Lundie enjoyed watching Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, his favorite golfers, on television. Mr. Lundie is survived by his wife, Margaret; one daughter, Deborah Jaggers-Baccino; and two granddaughters, Danielle Jaggers and Morgan Baccino. He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory.
Private services were held on Feb. 17 at Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville. Kuiper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requested that contributions be made to the American Heart Association or the Visiting Nurses Association Mary E. Bartz Hospice Center.
