Isabella Erwine (daughter of Anthony Erwine and Isabella Percival) was born 03 May 1860 in Nenthead, Cumberland, England566, and died date unknown. She married William Thomas Hall on 14 Feb 1885 in Prudhoe, Northumberland, England566.
Notes for Isabella Erwine: Isabella Erwin, Anthony's daughter, married William Hall in Prudhoe, Nbl & in 1891 they are living in Leadgate, NW Durham with their two small sons & Isabella's brothers George, Anthony & Thomas. Her parents then moved to Leadgate with their two youngest children & Isabella's illegitimate son Alfred and her bros moved back in with their parents.
I have a booklet on Nenthead, the highest village in England. We visited there last spring, travelling from Alston to Garrigill & across to Nenthead. The views were fantastic, but it must have been a Spartan existence during the winter months. Apparently there are deeds of cottages dating back to the early 1600s, but Nenthead village itself began in 1753 with the extension of the smelt mill & the building of a small group of cottages close by. The London Lead Co started leasing land about 1750 at the head of the river Nent. the booklet also mentions some of the residents who left to go abroad. One was 'John Thompson who went to America & as Dr Thompson became head of the City Temple in Chicago. He did not forget his native village for when electricity was installed in the Methodist church he sent a generous donation.'
I was born a Thompson but my family originated from Northumberland.
It was interesting to hear how your family came to be in America. Isabella Erwin, Anthony's daughter, married William Hall in Prudhoe, Nbl & in 1891 they are living in Leadgate, NW Durham with their two small sons & Isabella's brothers George, Anthony & Thomas. Her parents then moved to Leadgate with their two youngest children & Isabella's illegitimate son Alfred and her bros moved back in with their parents.
My grandfather George Andrew Hall, the younger of the two sons (they had a younger sister who died aged 15), married Ann Balmer & had a son William & a dau Isabel. Isabel mar George Thompson & I am the only child born in my grandparents' house in Leadgate during the 2nd World War. I now live in a village west of the city of Leicester in the Midlands with my husband Derek, We have two sons, not living in this area, with one grandson & 3 granddaughters, Isabel being one of them ,so the name lives on.
Back to the past. Hannah's birth cert states that she was registered in the district of Alston & Garrigill, being born on 5th Mar 1841 at Nenthead, father George Irwin, mother Isabella Irwin formerly Hewitson. Occupation of father, smelter of lead ore.her birth was registered on 10th Mar 1841 by her mother who just put x for her signature. This is why there are so many variations of Erwin.
When Catherine IRVIN was bap Jan 1798 it gave her father John (miner n o West Allendale) & her mother Catherine ROBINSON (n o Nenthead) When Anthony ERWEN was bap Apr 1805 - father John ERWEN & mother Catherine ROBISON
John died as EREWEN & Catherine as ERWEN.
In Allendale PRs I found the bap on 29 Dec 1757 of John Irwin son of George of Dryside. (Another reason why J & C must have had a son Geo). 20 May 1738 Ann Urwin dau of Geo of Far Home House & 26 Dec 1736 Geo Urwin son of Geo of Far Home House, who died 11 Jul 1737.
Census 1841 (6th June) At Smelt Mill, remembering that ages were in 5s for over 10s - IRWIN- George 45 lead miner, Isabella 45, John 25 lead miner, Catherine 15, George 15, Joseph 10, Isabella 10, Anthony 8 ,Rachel 8, Betty 3, Hannah 3mths.
You have 1851 when they were living at Burn Bottom & Geo &Is were dead by 1861. In 1861 Ant was married & living at Overwater with wife Isabella, son Joseph & dau Isabella. In 1871 they were all at Hill Top with Geo, Ant & Thos. By 1881 they're at Hillersden Ter plus John, Mary Ann & grandson Alfred. 1891 they were at Hill Top again with only John, Mary Ann & Alfred at home before they moved to Leadgate, Durham.
I found Hannah in 1881 census & 1901. In a couple of weekswe are going to London to the Family Record Centre where all BM&D are held, also all the censuses. If you would like me to look anything up I'd be quite happy to do so.
After this long message I will leave the Hewitsons 'till another time.
Regards Jean.
1901 Census listed Hannah as living alone age 58 at West Nenthead.
