The Orttenburger Family Home PageUpdated September 5, 2000
Wladyslaw Ortenburger is my Grandfather. He was 26 years old when he arrived in New York in 1907. His father, August Ortenburger is listed as the nearest relative he left in Russia.
Wladyslaw was heading for a final destination of Detroit, Michigan. It is not known if he ever made it to Detroit in 1907. If he did it was for a very short stay as Wladyslaw moved on to Chicago, Illinois by 1909.
Wladyslaw was born in the Russian Empire. August Eduard Ortenburger (his father) was born on 15 December 1833 in Erdmannshain, Schlesien born to (Johann) David Ortenburger and Eleonore Nier. August was baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ludwigsthal. August married about 1870 to Tekla Golombek (Golabek), a Catholic. He eventually moved to the Russian Empire just over the Silesian border. His occupation was an Innkeeper after studying to be a Mill apprentice. He lived and died in the area of Czestochowa (Tschenstochau).
Wladyslaw Ortenburger's footsteps were as elusive as any immigrant who came to the USA to find a new life. It took 13 years to trace his direct line to the year 1575. I will put my findings in an upcoming book.
The author of this home page is working with Christl Ortenburger from Munich, Germany and other members of his Ortenburger family in Germany, The United States & Poland on the Ortenburger Family History. We are writing a book on the "factual" Ortenburger Family History. Rick Ortenburger has already authored five other books on the subject of Antique German (Schwarzwald Uhren) & Austrian (Wiener Uhren) clocks so I am well versed on how to complete a book. I have found over 1500 documents from Church records in Germany (Empire), Russia and Poland that relate to my Ortenburger & descendant family. I attended an Ortenburger Meeting (Treffen) in Hoexter, Germany in August 1996. I have visited Germany 14 times in 27 years since I was married in Germany in 1970. My wife still has family in Germany near Miltenberg am Main.
I have already documented over 550 descendants of my Ortenburger family and I add relatives frequently from my weekly research. I have over 250 pictures of our relatives and the areas they lived in to include in the book. I have the Ortenburger direct family line to the mid 1500's. I wish to document & include every descendant from our Ortenburger family in the book that I am writing. Pictures & stories from our relatives make a book of names and dates come alive!
The Hessen & Schlesien Ortenburger Family History book is now 17 chapters in length and is over 350 pages. I will also write parts of it in the German language. The books will grow to at least 400 pages (maybe more) when all of the pictures, stories and documents are added in to the book. It covers the migration of our family through Germany to the Province Silesia & Russia (now Poland). It also covers the evacuation back to West Germany as told by my living relatives. It will include many different occupations from our family members and covers the Ortenburger family still living in different parts of Europe. The book will be available from Rick Ortenburger after the printing, hopefully this year in 1998. After the book is published this home page will include all surnames found that relate to my family. Until then, Rick Ortenburger has a lot of work to finish up. Check this site again for updates.
