| Although no direct proof has been found to document the father of Jonathan Hudson Osborne, we know from his Civil War records that he was born in the eastern section of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina that became a part of the present day Union County in 1842. This narrows his birth place to somewhere between the present eastern boundry of Mecklenburg County and approximately Highway 200. Knowing that Jonathan was born October 16, 1825, and using the 1830 US Census for Mecklenburg County, we can use the process of elemination to determine that John Osborne, son of Alexander Osborne was most probably Jonathan's father. In the 1830 Census, all of the Osbornes listed in eastern Mecklenburg County were related. John Osborne was born 7 Aug 1802 and because he was not listed in the 1840 US Census, most likely died before 1840, when Jonathan would have been 15 years old. In Alexander Osborne's Last Will and Testament that was probated in the April 1843 session of the Union County Court, John was listed as being deceased. The fact that John died at a relatively young age contributes to little being known about him. Hopefully, further rsearch will prove definitely that John was the father of Jonathan Hudson Osborne "Upright and just he was in all his ways. A bright example in degenerate days." Headstone - J. H.
