My interest in the history of my ancestors began many years ago. It was continually fueled with the numerous family stories I heard while growing up. For instilling in me this special love of family and a driving desire to learn more about my family, I dedicate this page to my grandmothers:

  • EDWARDS FAMILY OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO (103 KB)
There is no proof, only speculation that William is the father of John, Samuel and Charles Edwards who immigrated from England to the United States in 1830. All three brothers settled briefly in Eastern Pennsylvania. John, the eldest, relocated to Independence Township, Washington County, Ohio by 1840. Although, Samuel purchased land here in 1837, it was another 6 years before he left Pennsylvania. Apparently Charles relocated to Western Pennsylvania and lived out his life in the Pittsburgh area.
  • Herman and Helena Bloch Ring from Bielsko-Biala (12 KB)
In conversations with Mary Barbara Ring O'Toole, she identifies her grandparents as Arnold Von Ring and Helene Barbara Bloch and their children as Barbara, Leopold, John Joseph and Felix. There is some confusion as to the ancestry of Felix who was the only child born in the States. There is a photograph taken in Bridgeport, CT in 1892 of three individuals that Mary identifies as Barbara, Leopold and John J. Ring. Two different versions of Ring family history have been passed down. The first tells of Arnold Von Ring as a graduate of a German military academy, the equivalent of our West Point. He was a captain in the Prussian army and served during the Franco-Prussian War. For seven years he remained with the Prussian army, then fled and immigrated with his family to the United States. He and his wife, Helene Barbara Bloch, were the parents of four children, the youngest born here in the States. The other version has Arnold's death prior to emigration. Helene places the three children in the care of Nuns at the convent in Biela Belitz, Austria (now Bielsko Biala, Poland). It was indicated that the children were placed in the convent for protection until it was safe for them to leave the country. The story goes on to say that Helene marries, but it's not clear whether this second marriage is before or after her immigration to the US. Here, Felix is born to Helene and the, as yet, nameless second husband. The story goes further to say that Felix uses the surname of Ring, to avoid any confusion. In conversations with the sons of Felix, they said they had no knowledge of their father having any other surname than Ring, and there were no documents to indicate this was true. Recent findings (birth record) indicate the possibility that his father may have been Adolph Kwasny. The surname was very difficult to read. The daughter, Barbara, still remains a mystery. In the beginning stages of research, I concluded that Barbara was the mother of Walter Dziekiewicz who was known to be the nephew of John J. Ring. However, recent findings have determined that the parents of Walter were Alexander and Clementine Dziekiewicz. Descendants of Clementine and Alexander have no records in their possession that include Clementine's maiden name. Descendants have stated that the name may have been Ring, but thought it was more likely Ring something = Ringold, Ringoff, etc. I am left to wonder if Clementine and Barbara were one in the same person, perhaps Barbara Clementine or Clementine Barbara. According to family lore, the eldest son, Leopold, drown while trying to rescue a young boy from the river. Mary indicated that Leopold was a young man at the time of the rescue. In the course of our research we have discovered that Leopold did, in fact, drown in the South River in NJ. However, there was no young boy or any rescue. Following what today would possibly be labeled a bi-polar episode, Leopold walked into the river and to his death. Additional Information is included in Notes for Leopold. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ May 2001: I began collecting information on the Ring Family in 1975, but during those early years my concentration was directed more to raising my children than compiling a Family Tree. It was almost twenty years later when I could devote the attention necessary to follow up on the information I had gathered. I soon learned that finding information on this family was not going to be easy. I obtained copies of various records pertaining to John Joseph and Mary Irene Joyce Ring, but none of these records brought me any closer to finding John's parents. The Internet helped by opening up new avenues of knowledge and direction. In 1999, I received a call from a teacher in our school district. She said someone had posted a query on the Pittsburgh Genealogy Site seeking contact with Mary Ring O'Toole or a member of her family. That person was Nancy Ring Kendrick, granddaughter of Felix M. Ring. Since then, Nancy and I have worked together in our quest to find the parent's of John and Felix. Nancy is very driven and working with her has taken the Ring research to greater depths than I would have gone on my own. We know for certain that Leopold, Clementine and John are siblings and all three immigrated into this country. We know for certain that Felix, at least, shares the same mother. His birth record is the only record bearing the name of Helene Bloch that we have found. We know that Felix and John were raised by Leopold and Clementine. They lived for a time with Leopold and Regina in NJ and then later with Clementine and Alexander in RI. That leads us to believe that Helene died sometime prior to 1900. No death record or grave has been found to prove this assumption. We have located the graves of Leopold and Regina and also those of Clementine and Alexander. We have located and communicated with the descendants of Clementine. We have also communicated with a descendant of a sibling of Regina. Leopold's only living descendant is Jonathan Townsley, the son of Leona Bugan. We believe he lives near the Los Angeles area, but have not located him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ February 2003: A professional researcher was hired in Bielsko Biala. He reviewed the following areas for information on the Ring family: Jewish record books, city census records, tax and business records from The State Archive in Bielsko-Biala. Following is the information he was able to locate: Herman RING was born in 1850 in Nowy Sacz (formerly Sandez) or Grybow. The birth record of Bernhard states that his father Herman is from Grybow. Nowy Sacz and Grybow are cities in Galicia Province. Nowy Sacz is 22 km from Grybow. Around 1870 Herman Ring went to Kety near Biala and from Kety he went to Bystra near Bielsko. Herman Ring died in Bystra house #8, on 21 July 1884 at 34 years of age; he is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-Aleksandrowice, grave #F-VIII-2272. Bernhard Ring was born 23 March 1883 in Bystra, house #8. Bernhard Ring was the son of Herman Ring and Helene (Leni) Bloch. Baruch Bloch was the father of Helene (Leni) Bloch. Salca (Sali) Ring was born in Bystra in house #8. She died 13 April 1881 in Bystra and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-Aleksandrowice in children sector "D". She was the daughter of Herman Ring and Helene (Leni) Bloch. In 1885 a baby was born to Herman Ring and Helene (Leni) Bloch in Bystra. The child died during birth and was not named. The baby is buried in Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-Aleksandrowice in children sector "D". Hospital records indicate that Gusti (Augusta) Ring, age 24, died of Typhus on 22 August 1915 in the Bielsko Hospital. Her home was registered as Krynica (Krynica is near Nowy Sacz and Grybow). She was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Bielsko- Aleksandrowice, grave number: F-VI-2216. Although not a child of Herman and Helena, she may be a relative of Herman Ring. *****************************************************************
