      1. Thomas1 Sexton was born 1790 in SC, and died Abt. 1859 in AL. He married Ellen ???. She died Bef. 19 Oct 1868 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL.

Notes for Thomas Sexton:
The 1830 census index for AL lists M. Sexton, Tusc., p. 319; Michael Sexton, St., p. 253, N. Sexton, Tusc., p. 308, and Yancy Sexton, Tusc., p. 351. Have not been able to prove any relationship.

Feb. 5, 1834, Court of Revenue and Roads: Ordered that the following persons be and they are hereby appointed overseers on the different roads hereinafter mentioned to wit: Crabbs Road - 3rd grade and 6 precinct. Precinct N.7. from Cardwells old place to where Carroll old road intersects the same south of Benjamin Whitfields. Thomas Sexton, Overseer. 2. Thence to the 10 mile post - Enock Dodson. 3. Thence to the 15 mile post - Wm. Bolton. 4. Thence to the 20 mile post James -?-. 5. Thence to the 25 mile post - E. Waldrop. 6. Thence to the 30 mile post - James Harbin.

1840 Tuscaloosa Co. census records list Thomas Sexton as head of household with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, 4 females 5 to 10, and 1 female 30 to 40.

Family is not listed on the 1850 Tusc. Co. census. Family not listed on the 1855 Tuscaloosa Co., AL, census, transcription by Pauline Jones Gandrud.

Deed from Thomas Sexton to Robert Cook for 1 wagon and 8 steers recorded Bk. 5, p. 320, dated Sept. 1, 1843. Deed dated May 12, 1857, from Thomas Sexton to R. C. Thomas and James A. Thompson.

Deeds/mortgages recorded from Thomas Sexton to other individuals recorded AA:404, AA:463, AA:479, V. 2: 154, 3:543. The only deed that I've found thus far (1Mar 1998) that mentions real estate is recorded in Deed Book Z, page34. N1/2NE1/4 sec. 3, T. 20, R. 11, 80 acres. Original patent for this property was to Josiah South dated 7 Nov 1837. Unable to find how Thomas obtained land and unable to find out what happened to property at his death.

Marriage record of Mahala states that she was married at the home of Thomas Sexton (28 Oct 1855). He apparently died between 1857 and 1860. There was a mortgage recorded in Tuscaloosa Co., Deed Book 4, p. 254, dated 12 May 1857 from Thomas Sexton to Thomas and Thomson.

He enlisted in the War of 1812 on July 11, 1812, and was discharged at Point Peter (Oglethorpe Co.), State of GA, on Jan 10, 1814. He served as a Sergt. in the company commanded by Capt. Robert Cunningham in the 18th Regiment of Regulars commanded by Lieut. Col. Lawrence Manning. He received bounty land in Tuscaloosa Co., AL, for this service (Warrant 6592). Information is recorded in Tract Book, Fayette Co., AL. Description of property is E1/2 SE1/4 sec. 11 (79.76 acres) and W1/2SW1/4 sec. 12, T. 17, R. 12 W., property was actually located in Fayette Co. Unable to find a deed transferring ownership from any Sexton heir. Earliest tax records are 1918. At that time property was owned by D. R. Tucker

Jones-Gandrud, v. 142, p. 13, Tuscaloosa Co., AL, information on will of Ellen Sexton deceased. Heirs: John Sexton; Peachy, wife of Martin Logan; Ann, wife of Byrd Logan; Eliza, wife of George Maddox; Susan Sexton; Thomas C. Sexton; Mahaly, wife of John [sic] Bingham; Harriet, wife of John Roberts; F. Sexton of MS; Silas G. Sexton and Nancy Sexton. Ellen died before Oct. 19, 1868. Silas G. and Nancy were minors in 1868 (Orphans Ct. Bk. 9, p. 656). E. A. Powell appointed administrator. He filed petition to sell real estate.

Patent issued to James Sexton on 2 July 1860 for the NE1/4NW1/4 sec. 3, T. 20 S., R. 11 W., 40 acres. This property was later mortgaged by Ellen Sexton (Deed Book 7, p. 428). It was also included in the real estate sold at public auction to settle her estate (E2NW4 sec. 3, T. 20, R. 11). Brown L. Bigham, husband of Mahaley Sexton, placed the highest bid. Need to get dates. (Ref: Orphans Court Minute Book 10, p. 48, 495, 577. Hearing was set for 15 Aug. 1870). Still unable to find a deed to Brown.

1860 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census shows Elender Sexton age 55 born SC, as head of household with Susan age 19 born AL, Thomas age 17 born AL, and Harriett age 14 born AL.

1880 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census the household next to Byrd and Ann Sexton was Harriet Maddox. A Susan Sexton age 38 born AL parents born SC with 2 children, Callie 17 born AL and Dezalee 3 months born AL. Caledonia Sexton married Thomas Savage Jan 19, 1884, Bird Logan listed as L.S.

Tuscaloosa County, Alabama Records, v. 2, 1887-1891, Tuscaloosa Times excerpts, by Maggie Hubbard Sudduth, 1988, p. 10: May 18, 1887, Wednesday (Note from M.S.: was May 25, 1887 I believe). Page 3, column 4 - Miss Sexton, sister of Mrs. Bird Logan, with whom she lived for several years, was found dead in her sleeping apartment last Monday morning.

1880 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census - Hariett Madox 35 widow AL, parents born SC, living next to Byrd and Ann Sexton Logan. In household with Hariett was Susan Sexton 38 AL SC SC, Callie 17 AL SC SC, and Dezalee 3 months AL SC SC.

Marriage records indicate Caledonia Sexton married Thomas Savage on 19 Jan 1884. Bird Logan listed as L.S.

Mrs. Maddox Dead -- Mrs. Harritt Maddox died at the home of her niece Mrs. A. Hyche in Tuscaloosa last Saturday. Funeral services and the burial were on Sunday.
