Anyone who has attempted genealogical research prior to the days of computers, the internet and the fast response of emails is well aware of the long hours and days spent transcribing data from old and dusty courthouse ledgers. They also will remember trudging from one historical society to another and the long waits to receive a response from a correspondent via the U. S. mail.
My research began many years ago in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, where I was born and lived the first five years of my life. Since then, I have spent portions of the next fifty years traveling extensively in PA and other states in search of information and gravesites. Returning in retirement in 2001 as a (permenent) resident once again, in York Co. this time, has allowed for unlimited time and opportunities to complete my research.
A wealth of information has been accumulated since 2001, including an amazing discovery at the Hamilton Library of the Cumberland County Historical Society in Carlisle, PA. It is here that I encountered much information on the Bratton families in Cumberland County and more directly, in Carlisle, that I heretofore, never knew existed.
The CCHS is truly an amazing society and their library is the most complete genealogicl library of its type I've used anywhere. It is the very inviting and helpful staff to whom I owe tremendous gratitude for giving me the impetus to continue my search. Anyone who is researching ancestry in central Pennsylvania would do well to visit this wonderful library or at least search online in the society's website.
My remaining quest is to determine a biological connection between the Juniata County Brattons and the Cumberland County Brattons. For some time I've felt that I'm close to reaching that goal, but it hasn't happened yet.
