LE LINCOLN HILL:
Occupation - Teacher and Farmer.
      When Lincoln was 18 or 19 years old decided that he wanted a better education than offered by a one room school. He walked five miles to the high school in Rochelle, completing the four-year course in two years. He applied at the University of Minnesota for enrollment but was turned down because he didn't have enough foreign language credit. Not to be denied, Lincoln informed them that he had learned Norwegian before he learned English, so had fluent use of two languages and asked how many enrollees they had that could do so well. He was admitted and received his degree in three years graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1897.
      Lincoln was the one who built the first telephone in Northern Illinois. He cut willow poles and strung a wire from home place to his Uncle Rasmus Hill's farm over half a mile away. He spoke into a drum type of receiver that transmitter the voice clearly for that distance. HE was terribly disappointed when his father made him take it down. Peter was afraid lightning would follow the wire and set the house afire. Heavy electrical storms seemed to be especially destructive in those days. It was not unusual to see several farm building fires burning after a storm.

      Lincoln wrote the following poem in honor of his Mother - Osay or Aasa Hill. It was published in Minneapolis, Minnesota in a publication called "The Young People's Friend".

MOTHER'S HAND

Extend to me thy hand, Mother,
Gently I'll warm it in mine;
Ah! No other hand deserves so
Tender a clasp as thine.

It is wrinkled and cold, Mother,
The fingers are bony and bent;
Youthful vigor, form and beauty
Have vanished with its strength.

Yet there's no hand so dear, Mother,
So tender, so kind, so free;
Indeed, it's trembling form reveals
The love you've shown from me.

It held me on your knee, Mother,
It pressed me to your breast,
Till quietly I was lulled asleep
In sweet and peaceful rest.

From early morn till late, Mother,
Through years it care for me,
Far stronger now my hand has grown,
It now shall care for thee.

Then let it gently rest, Mother,
Its task has been well done,
Until in heaven it shall bear
The palm of victory won.
