1. JOHN GRIMES2 (LITTLE) (BELL1) was born Abt. 1800 in Va, and died Aft. 1840. He married UNK. She was born in TN.
Notes for JOHN GRIMES (LITTLE):
Henry Grimes received a North Carolina land grant 1794 in Hawkins County, TN. Later, we find him in Claiborne, County, TN. Claiborne County, Hawkins County, TN and Lee County TN are very close to one another. The families moved a lot between these counties and Hancock County, TN. Henry Grimes was probably father to William, Gainford and John Grimes. who were living in the area now known as Claiborne County. In the late 1700's there was a place called Grimes Campsite. In the 1820 Lee County Census, we find William and Gainford Grimes and their families. ( On another note, there were Gibson's living all around them.) In 1830 Claiborne County Census, we find that William and Gainfor have moved near John Grimes. In the household beside of John Grimes, there is a man by the name of John (little) Grimes as head of household.
Family legend has it, as told by my grgrandfather John Grimes, that his grandfather, John Grimes, was raised by a Grimes family. He said that his grandfather's name was Bell."John Bell" would have been 8 to 10 years old in 1830. Although there were children in the home, John Grimes, Sr , 70 years old seems unlikely. Henry had no children at this time. John, Jr and John (little) live next door to one another. John, Jr had no sons in the household at that time. John (little) had 2 sons in the right age group to be James Grimes. It seems highly unlikely that John, Sr would name 2 sons after himself. It seems probable that John (Little) may be our John Bell.
