James was married 1st to Matilda Lifford. They lived near one another in Claiborne County. Her parents were originally from Ireland. James was 21 and Matilda was 26 when they married. In 1856 James sold his property and sometime after moved to Hancock County Tn. Matilda, died after 1860. James, then met Delilah Jane Muncey in 1869. In 1860, Delilah Jane was living with her mother in Lee County Va.
