1. JOHN¹ CARAWAY was born Abt. 1619 in York, N Yorkshire, England, and died Abt. 1669 in Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk, Virginia, USA. He married ANN FOSTER 1650 in Lower Norfolk Cty, VA, daughter of RICHARD FOSTER and ANNE. She was born Abt. 1619 in England, and died Abt. 1692 in Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk, Virginia, USA.

24 OCT 1635 persons embarked on the Abraham of London, Mr. John Barker, bound (from London) to Virginia. Joan Carraway age 22.

The first Carraway in this country was said to be Jon or John. He is reported by some to have arrived in VA in the 1630's.

1642 Christopher Boyce patented 2000 acres at Peankatanke R. for transporting many settlers among them Jon Carraway, Jon Williams, Edmund Porter, Jr. and Sr. and John Porter, Jr. and Sr., Elizabeth Flowerdieu, Thomas Kemp and John Memmo. (Most of these people settled in Lower Norfollk Cty, near the Elizabeth River.

Another Authority puts it at 1644. In 1644 John Sydney, gent., patented 200 acres in Lower Norfolk on north side of E. Branch of Elizabeth River for the transportation of four persons: John Carraway, John Clarke, Ann Robinson and Elizabeth Flowerdieu. (Note: Elizabeth Flowerdieu appears twice.)

John Carraway, lived in what later became Princess Anne VA and married Anne Foster Williamson, a widow, in 1649 in Lower Norfolk Cty, VA . He was thought to have been born in 1619 in York, Yorkshire, England (other authorities say Lacock, England) and died ca 1669 in Lower Norfolk Cty. The marriage took place ca 1649.

Notes from Eddie Smith John Caraway arrived 24 Oct 1635. That Roger William(son) was a Scottish Emigrant. According to the Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Lower Norfolk Cty 1641-1654 Ann Foster William(son) and her husband Roger had four children.

(16 37-1663) John Carraway age 40 years old in 1659.

ANN FOSTER: Born about 1620 England. Died about 1692 Lower Norfolk County, Va. Parents are unknown. May be buried in Lynnhaven Parish Church Cemetery.

JOHN II born about 1653 VA. Died about 1728 VA.
MARY born about 1657 VA. Died 1706 VA. Married Lancaster II Lovett about 1677. Mary was a direct ancestor through another line. The line of descent from her is further in the book. (Do not know which book as Frances never told me)
ANN FOSTER was married to Roger Williams or Williamson before she married John Carraway and had three children by him: SARAH - RICHARD - Bartholomy

John was transported to Virginia by John Sidney as an indentured servant in 1644. He settled in Lynnhaven Parish of Lower Norfolk County, VA. In the John Sidney patent (the same John Sidney, no doubt, whose will Ann Carraway witnessed and proved), in addition to the name of John Carraway, John Clarke and Elizabeth Flowardieu, there was also one Ann Robinson. As stated Ann Carraway, widow of Roger Williams of Williamson, knew John Sidney personally, she may have been the Ann Robinson of the 16th Sep 1644 patent (Nugent, p.127; Boddie, p6, 29).

ANN left a will dated June 13, 1689 and proved Nov 15, 1692 as follows:

CHRONOLOGICAL RECORD OF JOHN 1 AND ANN CARRAWAY
1. 1644, John Sydney, Gent., 200 acres transferred to 4 persons - one was JOHN CARRAWAY. In Lower Norfolk County, VA. Ref: Cavaliers and Pioneers by Nugent, p155.

2. 1631-1645: The following are some of the people who lived in Lower Norfolk County, 1631- 1645, and are among the first settlers...JOHN CARRAWAY. Ref Norfolk County, Virginia by Steward, p18.

3. 31 Jul 1650: Will of Richard Foster, of Elizabeth River, VA, leaves unto Sarah Williams, under 16...unto JOHN CARRAWAY her father-in-law... (compiler's note: this often expressed the same relationship as step-father a term not used in colonial wills) ...if Sarah dies..equally divided between children of Roger Williams and JOHN CARRAWAY. Ref: Abstracts of Norfolk County Wills by McIntosh.

4. 17 Apr 1652: Elizabeth Carraway, daughter of JOHN and ANN, relict of Roger Williamson: Deed of gift, Symon Hancock gives his Godson John Williams a cow-calf in this manner; the first calf it brings for use of said John Williams, the third calf to be for use of Elizabeth Carraway. If John Williams die before 21 the cattle to Elizabeth Carraway. If she die before coming of age the cattle to JOHN CARRAWAY his second or third child and for the better looking after these cattle it is my desire that the father or mother shall have the male increase, and this is to be recorded as a free gift. 5. 1652: JOHN CARRAWAY, who married the relict of Roger Williams, dead, ordered to take into his custody all cattle belonging to orphans of said Williams until next orphan's court. Compiler's note: the term orphan here meant any child who lost his father before he became of age, not simply both parents.

6. 1652: Cause between JOHN CARRAWAY and Richard Webster (or Woster) continued to next court .

7. 16 Aug 1652: JOHN CARRAWAY on "Jury of Life and Death" finds Agnes Holmes not guilty of killing Usela Rider. Ref: Same as #4 above, p27.

8. 15 Feb 1653: JOHN CARRAWAY juror on case of Lownes vs Rivers. Ref: Same as #4 above, p86.

9. 15 Dec 1654: JOHN CARRAWAY signs a request for "a godly minister" to his parish. Ref: The Lower Norfolk County, VA Antiquary by James, Vol 3, p29

10. 29 June 1655: JOHN CARRAWAY by X "his marke" was witness to will of William Moseley the older.

13. 15 Dec 1662 JOHN CARRAWAY acted on church jury in case of unlawful meeting of Quakers. Consequently, Quakers (man and wife) were fined 500 pounds of tobacco. Ref: Same as #3 above, p33

14. 1663 ANN CARRAWAY "aged 43 or about" witnessed and proved a nuncupative (oral) will of John Sidney Ref: same as #3 above, p22

15. 1663 John Porter, Sr. buys 300 acres Lower Norfolk Co.; description of land "...to Jno CARRAWAY'S land..." Ref: same as #1 above, p66

16. 17 Nov 1666 ANN CARRAWAY sued George Fowler for a cow killed by his family and Fowler was ordered to deliver a cow and calf to Ann. (Compiler's theory: that by this date JOHN CARRAWAY, though estate not appraised until 1669, had already died. Why would he himself, if living, not have instigated the lawsuit? A married woman had little legal voice, a widow did. Ref: History of Southern Families by Boddie, Vol 6, p27

17. 15 June 1669 It was ordered that William Hancock, Arthur Moseley, Thomas V. Ivey and George Kemp appraise the estate of JOHN CARRAWAY. (This would prove that John Carraway had died by this time.) Ref: Same as #16 above, Vol 6, p27

Note Item of interest. Sep 1637: ANN WILLIAMSON and Ann Stephens said vile things about John Wattham and were order to be ducht and ask forgiveness in public congregation. (This Ann Williamson was our Ann before she married John CARRAWAY) Ref: Virginia Colonial Abstracts by Beverly Fleet

Note on Sarah Williams mentioned in #3: She was evidently a daughter of Roger and Ann Williamson. As she was not mentioned in her mother's will in 1689, she must have died in the mean time.

NOTES FROM LARRY CLAYTON:
Arrived to America, October 24, 1635, and married the Relic of "Roger Williamson". Scottish Emigrants to the U.S.A. Believed to have been born in York, North Yorshire County, this has not been proven as of 10/31/99. Mr. Glenn Carraway believes that he may have been born Wiltshire County, England.
