107. SUSANNA⁷ OATES (PHEREBY⁶ CARAWAY, JOHN⁵, JOHN⁴, JOHN³, JOHN², JOHN¹) was born January 19, 1796. She married ADAM CARAWAY July 26, 1746, son of JOHN CARAWAY and MARGARET KEELING. He was born Abt. 1737 in ,Craven, North Carolina, USA, and died Bef. November 25, 1807 in ,Wayne, North Carolina, USA.

Notes for SUSANNA OATES:
One source has her birth listed as January 19, 1796. According to Gerald Westmoreland her date of birth is 24 Mar 1756 in Virginia and her death is 22 May 1832 in Wayne Cty, NC.

Duplin County, NC a litigation went on for 9 years from Sept 1826 until 20 March 1835 between Henry Kornegay and Polly Maria Kornegay by her guardian Henry Kornegay vs Bryan Carraway, Susannah (Oates) Carraway and Samuel B. Bowden.

In 1823 Henry Kornegay says he owned 5 slaves and, in order to convey them to his family he deeded them to Susannah Carraway. On the same day Susannah Carraway deeded one slave to Polly Maria Kornegay and the other 4 to Nancy Kornegay, wife of Henry Kornegay. In April 1826 Susannah was living in the house of Henry Kornegay and his claim was she took the deeds from the house and destroyed them before they could be recorded.

Later, Bryan Carraway sold the slaves to this son-in-law, Samuel Baker Bowden who in turn sold them to some unknown, un-named party.

No decision was made by Judge J. Daniel as he thought there was not sufficient evidence.

The will of Susannah Carraway was dated 10 Feb 1835 in Wayne County:

To her daughters Sally Hines and Mary Wolf and granddaughter Anna Roberts "all my wearing clothes and apparel also my bed clothing (except clothing complete for one feather bed) to be equally divided among them."

To granddaughter Anna Roberts "one feather bed and furniture complete."

To sons Bryan and James Carraway "Ten cents each for their full share of my estate".

To Daughter Zilpha "Ten cents as her full share".

To children of my deceased daughters Elizabeth Edwards and Nancy Kornegay "twenty cents for their mother's part of my estate in full".

All the rest I give to my grandson in law John Roberts in order to make him some small compensation for the trouble care and expense he has been at with me.

John Roberts her sole executor. Wit: 10 Feb AD 1835.

Wayne County, May term 1835 the within will of Susannah Carraway was proved in open court and duly proved by the oath of Jno. T. Bryan, a subscribing witness and let it be recorded. (Wayne Cty, NC Will Bk -7, p70)

Susannah Carraway, wife of Adam Carraway, left a will dated Feb 10, 1835, Wayne County, NC in which she named daughters Sally Hines, Mary Wolf (also known as Polly), Zilpha Roberts, sons Bryan and James Carraway, granddaughter Anna Roberts, children of her deceased daughters Elizabeth Edwards and Nancy Kornegay. She named her gandson-in-law John Roberts as her executor. Will recorded in Wayne County, NC Will book R-7, p70.

Notes for ADAM CARAWAY:
One source has his date of birth as about 1737 in Craven Cty, NC not Princess Ann, VA. They have his death as before February 1809 as another source has it listed as 1807. They have his marriage date as 26 July 1774 and her parents as James and Sarah Oates. Sarah's maiden name unknown. They also have an 8th child listed as Adam Keeling Caraway who was born about 1790.

21 Feb 1775, John Oates sold Adam Caraway a negro boy, Ned about 11 yrs. old for 36 pounds 6 shillings and 8 pence. Wayne Cty, NC, Bk 7, p86.

1786 Wayne Cty Tax List shows Adam Carraway with 1106 acres of land, 1 poll and 5 slaves. Journal of NC. Genealogy, Vol 8, #1, p940.

1803 List of Taxable property in Capt. Flower's Dis., John Carraway 1946 acres, 1 white poll and 1 black poll; Adam Carraway 1031 acres and 7 black polls.

17 Feb 1804, Adam made a deed of gift to son Bryan, "all land I am now possessed of on N/sd of a branch that runs through my plantation....reserving right of same in myself during my natural life and also to my wife Susannah Carraway during her natural life or widowhood." B k 7- 476. On same date, Adam made deed of gift to son James, "all the land I now possessed of on S/sd of a branch that runs through my plantation including the houses whereon I now live (patented in my name 17 July 1797)... 100 acres reserving the right of the same during my n atural life and also to my wife Susannah during her natural life or widowhood." 11 Jan 1806, Adam sold a negro girl named Pris to Henry Flowers for $265. Signed by Adam Carraway and witnessed by Daniel Kornegay. Wayne Cty, NC Bk 8, 339.

27 Nov 1807, inventory was made of the Estate of Adam Carraway (who died intestate) by Henry Roberts and Willis Hines, Administrators. Record of Accts, Wills and Settlements, No. 103 . 501.01 - 103.501.21, Wayne Cty, NC.

Feb term 1810, "Henry Roberts, Guardian in account with James Carraway and Miss Nancy Carraway, orphans". Wills, Accts, Inc. and Sales, Vol 1(A), 2,3, p.237.

Nov Term 1808, negroes belonging to the Estate of Adam Carraway, decd, were divided by order of the court between the widow Susannah Carraway and 7 children: Sally Hines wife of Willis Hines, Polly Wolf widow of Richard Wolf, Zilpha Roberts wife of Henry Roberts, Bryan Carraway, James Carraway, Elizabeth Carraway and Nancy Carraway as follows:

No 1 by Susannah Carraway - 2 slaves and an amount from lot No. 3.
No 2 by Nancy Carraway - 2 slaves and she pays to Lot No. 4.
No 3 by Elizabeth Carraway - 2 slaves and child and she pays to No. 4 and No. 1 and also to Richard Wolf.
No 4 by James Carraway - 3 slaves and he receives from No 2 and No 3.

The following Inventories of property given by Adam Carraway in his lifetime to his children was delivered to us on Oath of the persons herein named which we value as follows:

By Willis Hines: one negro girl, misc. household items and livestock. Two negroes were added . By Henry Roberts: one negro woman, one boy, misc household items, livestock. A negro boy was added and he was ordered to pay a sum to Richard Wolf. By Richard Wolf: one negro girl , one boy, livestock and misc household items. Settlement of Estate of Adam Carraway
The following is an exerpt of the estate settlement of slaves and other property taken from Wayne County Wills, Vol 1(A) 1807-1811, pp159-160.

In obedience to an order of court issued November Term 1808 we have divided the negroes belonging to the Estate of Adam Carraway dec'd between the Widow Susannah Carraway and seven children, to witt: Sally Hines wife of Willis Hines, Polly Wolf wife of Richard Wolf, Zilpha Roberts wife of Henry Roberts, Bryan Carraway, James Carraway, Elizabeth Carraway and Nancy Carraway. The lots was drawn as follows:

No. 1 by Susannah Carraway - two slaves and an amount form lot No. 3.
No. 2 by Nancy Carraway - two slaves and she pays to Lot No. 4.
No. 3 by Elizabeth Carraway - two slaves and child and she pays to No. 4 and No. 1 and also to Richard Wolf.
No. 4 by James Carraway - three slaves and he receives from No. 2 and No. 3.

The following Inventories of property given by Adam Carraway in his lifetime to his children was delivered to us on Oath of the persons herein named which we valued as follows.
