123. HENRY C.7 CARAWAY (WILLIAM C.6, BEDREADON5, JOHN4, JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born December 25, 1803 in North Carolina, USA, and died November 15, 1891 in Nixon, Gonzales, Texas, USA. He married MARY ANN STAGGS 1832 in Pickens Cty, Alabama, daughter of JOHN STAGGS and MARY RILEY. She was born December 15, 1819 in ,,Alabama, USA, and died December 10, 1897 in ,Gonzales, Texas, USA.

Notes for H
ENRY C. CARAWAY:
Henry Caraway, Sr. is buried in Union Hill Cemetery. He married Mary Ann Staggs, daughter of John Staggs and his second wife Mrs. Mary Ann Riley. Mary Ann is buried besde her husband Henry in the Union Hill Cemetery, Gonzales County, Texas. Henry and Mary were probably married in Pickens County, Alabama. On 6 Dec 1832, a week after the birth of their frst child, Henry Caraway "of Pickens County, Alabama" applied for and received a grant of land under Cash Certificate No. 8688, from the Tuscaloosa land office for the SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 Sec. 18, T24, R2E, consisting of 39.885 acres. The description places the land in present day Greene County, Alabama.

On 15 June 1840, Henry Caraway of Yalobusha County, Mississippi purchased the E 1/2 of the S E 1/4 Sec. 11, T23, RE, consisting of 80.14 acres from the Chochuma, Mississippi land office, under Cash Certificate #6708. His application, made 3 Oct 1838 says "he had a dwelling house on and personally resided on the SE 1/3 of S. 11, T23, R7East on the 22 days of Feb and June 1838. That he is a married man and has made the above state house his personal residence since the fall of 1836. That his object in making said settlemlent was for the purpose of cultivation, he knows of no other person claiming a preemtion right to said land, he theref ore applies to enter the E 1/2 SE 1/4 Sec #11, T23, Range 7 East under the premption act of June 22, 1838. Zachariah Dunham and James F. Donham swore to the facts as given, and said that Caraway's family consisted of his wife and children. In the 1845 state census of Yalobush a County, Henry's household contained 5 males and 5 females. He was listed next to Jackson Brown.

Two years after the census on 27 March 1847, Henry Caraway and Elijah Yager, both of Yalobusha County, Mississippi purchased the rights of Me-ah-che-ho-nah, representative of Pis-ah-ch im -ah, deceased, to 80 acres of land to which the latter was entitled under the 14th and 19th articles of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, concluded Sept 1830 (Choctaw Scrip Cert. 4 02C). Henry's share of the purchase, amounting to 40.03 acres, was recorded in the Land Office at Grenada, MS as the N 1/2 of the E 1/2 NE 1/4, Sec 14, T23, R7E.

Greneada Cty, MS was formed in 1870 from Yalousha County and parts of 3 others. The land Henry once owned now lies on both sides of the Grenada and Yalobusha County line, between the two arms of the Grenada Resevoir, about a mile west ofthe Calhoun County line. Thomas J. Riley 's largest entry (descried later in this article) was about 1/4 mile further west, now in Grenada Cty, and adjoining A.J. Brown's entry (described later), which is still in Yalobusha Cty.

The 1840 census, shows Henry's family with 6 whites and 1 slave (a young boy). in 1850 besides his wife and children, Henry's household included 5 slaves; a 22 year old female, a 20 yr old male; 2 small girls and a baby boy.

No deed was found recording Henry's sale of land as he left MS, but the move was made during the winter of 1850-1851, as he appears on the tax rolls in Gonzales County, Texas with 4 negroes, 4 horses, 2 cattle, 1 wagon and 2 oxen, and 1 poll. His first purchase of land in Gonzales County was made in March 1851, when he bought 400 acres in the B. Lockhart league on Cattleman's Fork of Sandies Creek from Harrison Askey. An additional 90 1/2 acres were bought of George W. Guinn the following year.

He raised cattle and in 1858 was taxed for 100 head in Gonzales County and 200 head in Gillespie County. In 1859 he bought 200 acres from George W. Henry, adjoining School Land and Henry Caraway's own land. He continued as a slave holder, with 4 recorded in his household in 1860.

He was enrolled as a Private in Capt Michael Erskin's Calvalry Company, Sandies Home Guard, 25th Brigade, Texas Militia, in June 1861. Considering his age, it is unlikely he ever saw active service.

In 1870 he formed a brief partnership with John T. Nixon to purchase 1/3 league belonging to Jno A. Winn in Gonzales County. Henry later deeded several pieces of his share of the Winn survey to members of his family. After his death and that of his widow, his heirs deeded the remainder of his property to John J. Caraway, son of John Caraway, Sr. Twenty years later, because of a question about these deeds, affidavits of heirship were filed by Jesse Caraway , Henry's son, and F.J. Worthey, Henry's son-in-law. These set forth the names of Henry's children who were living and dead at the time of his death and in some cases his granchildren.

Mtchell Caraway may be the 27 year old black male in Henry Caraway's household in 1860, but names of slaves are not given on the schedule. He was found in post-Civil War records. He was listed on the 1866 list of freedmen in Gonzales County. He paid poll tax in 1867. He is not listed in the 1880 soundex, nor in the early Texas death records, which begin in 1903.
