Notes for P
IERRE CHASTAIN:
Notes for Pierre Chastain:
From Book VII, The Family of Martha Ann Chastain Ray:

"In sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe, the persecution of non-Catholics divided nations, towns, and even families. Many newly-converted Protestants were killed; many were forced to reestablish at least a face-saving and probably a life-saving commitment to the Catholic Church; and many others were forced to flee, sometimes openly, sometimes covertly, to other countries where their desire to seek God's will directly would be unchallenged.

"Protestants were known by many terms in various countries...The members of the Chastain family who became and remained Protestants were known as Huguenots, because of their French heritage...

"Dr. Pierre Chastain, Huguenot, refused to renounce Protestantism and chose, rather, to leave his native France, to begin a new life in the New World. Genealogist[s] believe it is from this man that most, if not all, of the Chastains in the United States descend.

"After a probable sojourn in Switzerland, Pierre Chastain with wife and children set sail from England... they arrived at the mouth of the James River and shortly thereafter settled at Manakin Town, King William Parish, Virginia, almost 20 miles from what is now Richmond."

"THE WILL OF PIERRE CHASTAIN"
"In the name of God, Amen, I Pierre Chastaine of the County of Goochland and Parish of King William being sick and weak but of sound mind and perfect memory (blessed be God) do make this my last will and Testament in manner following.

"First and principally, I give my Sould into the hands of Almighty God who gave it hoping through ye merits of my blessed Saviour to receive a joyful resurrection and as to what worldly Estate it hath pleas'd God to bless me with I dispose in the manner following.

"I give and devise unto my Son John Chastaine and to his Heirs forever one Tract of Land lying between John Lavillane and Jacob Ominies containing by estimation ninty acres - it being the Land where my said Son lives.

"I give and devise unto my Son Peter Chastaine and to his Heirs forever one tract of Land whereon I live it being One Hundred and Eleven Acres and is bounded on ye lower side by ye Gleabland and the upper side by ye land of Suanna Kerner and Glode Gory.

"I give and Devise unto my Son Rene Chastaine
