2. JAMES2 CLAYTON (WILLIAM1) He married (2) SARAH CARAWAY February 17, 1792 in Craven Cty, NC, daughter of NATHANIEL CARAWAY and MARY. She was born in Craven, North Carolina, USA, and died 1816.

Notes for JAMES CLAYTON:
The earliest association found between the two families came in 1771 when James Carraway, who se son Joseph had married James Clayton's step daughter, cosigned the bond of James Clayton t o act as administrator of the estate of Asenah Edwards. However it is likely that the two fa milies were acquainted in Hyde County before James Clayton moved to Craven.

In 1774 James Clayton, blacksmith purchased 240 acres on the south side of Bay River and eas t side of Trent Creek, "being half of Joseph Brooks patent for 500a of 5 May 1769. Three yea rs later Nathaniel Carraway, son of Thomas Carraway, bought 75 acres "part of William Brook s patent for 300a at the head of Trent Cr. It bordered land already owned by (a younger) Tho mas Carraway.

Abut 1770 James Clayton's step daughter, Sarah Edwards, became the wife of Joseph Carraway . The two families had adjacent property on the north side of Lower Broad Cr.

The will of James Clayton in 1783 indicates that his home plantation was adj to William Clayt on, Joseph Carraway and Joseph Good . His exors were "My son William Clayton and my friend s William Carraway Esqr and Joseph Good" (Presumably this is the William Carrawy whose will w as also made in 1783.

1810 Will mentions son Henry, dauaghter Fann, GD Polly Nelson, GD Ester Nelson, and son Gideo n.
