The June 1900 Bentonville, Benton, Arkansas census showed birth place as being in Virgini a . Other sources say he was born in Ireland.
Letter received from Elaine Gardner February 2001:
Jack always said he had Cherokee blood (or choctaw) and his Mom Daisy had the dark hair, ski n and eyes. She had an old photo album with a picture of John and Robert Horton (the brother s together) Robert and Daisy looked alike- my husband looked like John - grey eyes and ligh t skin. He said something about the Horton's going into Kentucky from West Virginia or Nort h Carolina. You might check on that direction. I would like to have some information on th e Robert Horton too as Daisy and Hurley were first cousins and my children have both John an d Robert as ancestors. Hopefully Robert wasn't as bad as his brother John.
