Notes for P
RENTIS ALVIN CARAWAY:
OBIT:
Dr. P.A. Caraway Passes away July 30; funeral held here on Sunday August 2. Dr. Prentis Alvin (P.A.) Caraway, age 82, of Goldthwaite, Texas died Thursday, July 30, 199 8 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Brownwood, Texas. Services were held Sunday, August 2, 1998 at the Stacy-Wilkins funderal Home Chapel with Dr. Thomas L. Loftin, Minister of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Masonic Burial followed at the Goldthwaite Mem orial Cemetery.

Dr. Caraway was born on the Caraway Ranch south of Goldthwaite on Dec 22, 1915, the son of Pleasant Keeling and Margie (Cozart) Caraway. A 1934 graduate of Goldthwaite high School, Caraway attended John Tarleton Agricultural College from 1934 to 1936. He received his BA from Texas A&M University in 1938 and his Masters and Doctorate from Michigan State University in 1948 and 1951 respectively.

He was a lieutenant in the Tarleton Cadet Corp. Infantry at Texas A&M. During active duty in WWII he served as Captain with the 36th Division and Fourth Infantry Division. His Army Career was from Nov 1940 until Feb 8, 1946.

His first teaching appointment was an Assistant Professor at Mississippi State University. After two years at MSU, he returned to Tarleton as chairman of the Dept of Biological Sciences. Post Doctoral studies under the national Science Foundation sent Dr. Caraway to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to study Nuclear Science. He was later assigned to the Nevada test program where he worked in Radiation biology.

Dr. Caraway was a master teacher and an avid supporter of education. He left Tarleton in 1965 to join the faculty at what was then West Texas State University and is now West Texas A&M. He served for many years as Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences and was a research Professor at the Kilgore Endowed Laboratory at West Texas A&M. He retired from teaching in 1978 and devoted more time to his interest in oil painting.

Dr. Caraway was past president of the Brownwood Art Association and was selected "Artist of the Year". His Hill County landscapes have been on display in the Mills County State Bank in Goldthwaite and the Gallery of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center on the Tarleton campus. In 1997, he was selected and honored by the Tarleton Alumni Association as one of the Distinguished Faculty at Tarleton State University. He was singled out for special recognition d uring the 1997 homecomming activities at the university.

When Tarleton awarded its first Bachelor of Science degree in biology, Dr. Caraway had the privilege of making the presentation. The awarding of the degree to Sammie Sides of Menard on May 26, 1963 was symbolic of the University's movement into a four year institution and it paid special respect to the man who was instrumental in guiding the Department of Biological Sciences toward that growth.

While serving as chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Caraway helped transform the junior college into a senior college. He was involved in the development of the Bachelor of Science in Biology curriculum and initiated the medical technology certificates progra m which was a forerunner for today's Bachelor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

Dr. Caraway also helped begin pre-professional programs in medicine, dentristry and veterinary medicine. Tarleton has gained a statewide reputation for providing qualiaty appliciants for the highly competitive admission process of these professional schools.

P.A. and his wife, Corrinne, who he married on May 16, 1941 at McKinney, Texas moved back t o Goldthwaite in 1980. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Goldthwaite and the Goldthwaite Masonic Lodge #694. He served as master of the Masonic Lodge from 1993 to 1994.
