Another source has their marriage 2 Nov 1880. It was said that he was a self proclaimed minister. That he would sit on the porch of the store in Woodhi Community and preach to anyone that would listen. He was a God fearing man who quoted scriptures daily.

Notes for ADELINE MAE BROWN:
It has been told that Addie was full blood Cherokee. If you look at the picture on my Heartland Web site you can see that she was definitely a native American. I can only remember that she was very quiet and grieved when her son Theo was put into prison for defending himself in a bar room brawl which later I discovered was not the truth, but the truth as one side of the family wanted it to be known. In reality, Theo and a friend were caught in an attemt to rob a store. The store owner later died as a result of injuries sustained in the fight and Theo was found guilty of murder and placed in a prison. He died the same day he was pardoned by the governor.

  Notes for THEODORE CARAWAY:
I grew up with the story of howTheodore was wrongly accused of killing a wealthy man who owned a grocery store. It was said that on the day before he was pardoned by the governor, inmates who had been hired by the man's widow, killed Theodore in prison. I have since found the truth from those he stayed with as a young man. He and a friend decided to rob the grocer and the grocer discovered them and chased them down the alley. They were arrested and while appeals were going he spent one year in the local jail of Victoria, Texas. He was later pardoned and returned to Victoria where it was discovered that he had cancer of the colon. He died at the local hospital. The doctor that signed the death certificate was O.S. McMullen .

While he was in prison he wrote to his neice Lois Horton. She saved his letters. I hope one day to be able to read those letters that are in the possession of her daughter Sandy.

Name of spouse has been different per several researchers. One has her as Louise Mary Cason James, another Louise James, and yet another as Mary Cason.

Also her death date has been listed as 1 Nov 1944. I will check and see if there is a death certificate which might give us the real date.

OBIT:
Mr. Jim Caraway, age 88, passed away Wednesday, November 1 at 12 o'clock noon at the home of his son P.K. Caraway. He had been confined to his bed for 2 -1/2 months. He has lived in Mills County for more than 50 years. Funeral services were held Thursday at 3 o'clock wit h Elder J.A. Dickens officiating and internment in the Goldthwaite cemetery. He is survied by his wife and son P.K. Caraway, two daughters Mrs. N.A. Lunsford of Hamilton and Mrs. J.S. Ivy of Goldthwaite, and a number of grandchildren and other relatives besides a host of friends to mourn his passing.

There is a discrepancy on year he died. One researcher says 1940 and another says 1946. According to Brown County, Tx Courthouse Records, Death Vol II, page 329, #458 he died in 1946.

OBIT OF: Samuel L. Caraway, 87 Pioneer Resident 1946
Samuel L. Caraway, 87, retired farmer and ranchman and pioneer resident of Hamilton and Mills counties, died Tuesday at 3 pm in a local hospital after a long illness. Mr. Caraway was born in Bee County, Nov 21, 1858, the son of Pleasant K. Caraway and Mrs. Nancy Watson Caraway. He settled at Caradan, Mills County and established the first store and post office there . The community of Caradan was named for him and Dan Bush, another pioneer, who later served in the Legislature. Later, Mr. Caraway moved to McGirk, Hamilton County and engaged in ranching for about 20 years. After retiring from active ranching, he moved to Goldthwaite and lived there for 8 or 10 years. He moved to Brownwood two years ago and resided at 304 N. Greenleaf. Funeral services were scheduled for 2pm today at London and Burton Funeral Home Chapel, with graveside services at the Goldthwaite Cemetery at 4pm, Rev. Ross Lowe of San Saba officiating. Mr. Caraway is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lou Caraway, 3 sons, Edgar Caraway of Globe, Arizona; Guy Caraway of Orange and G.C. Caraway of Ft. Worth, six daughters, Mrs. R.L. Cockrum of Goldthwaite, Mrs. G. Ball of Odessa, Mrs. J.E. Mayo of Brownwood; Mrs. Minnie Zackerson of Ft. Worth, Mrs. R.L. Fortune of Brownwood and Mrs. Lois Dewbre of Brownwood, 18 grand children, 15 great-granchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Mrs. Sam L. Caraway 78, long time resident of Mills county, died at the home of her daughter , Mrs. J.E. Mayo in Brownwood Tuesday night at 9 o'clock. Funeral srevices were held yesterd ay (Thursday) afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery, and burial foll owed there. She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Bob Cockrum, Goldthwaite; Mrs. J.E. Mayo , Brownwood; Mrs. R.L. Fortune of Brownwood; Mrs. Garfield Ball, Odessa; Mrs. Gus Zackerson a nd Mrs. Lois Dewbre of Ft. Worth; three sons, Edgar Caraway, San Carlos, Arizona; Guy Caraway , Corpus Christi; Grandville Caraway, Ft. Worth and a host of other relatives and friends.
