1. AARON1 SMITH was born 1720 in Princess Anne, Virginia, USA, and died July 01, 1776 in ,Cherokee, South Carolina, USA. He married ELIZABETH ANN CARAWAY Abt. 1741 in ,Craven, North Carolina, USA, daughter of JOHN CARAWAY and MARGARET KEELING. Notes for A
ARON SMITH:
On 2 July 1745 John Caraway made a deed of gift to "my loving son-in-law Aaron Smith" for 150 acres of land being part of the tract I NOW LIVE ON" S/sd of Neuse River and W/sd of Michael's Creek, Craven County, NC. (Bk 3, pp80-81)

According to Dr. James E. Caraway in a letter dated 19 July 1973 and written to a Mrs. Eby, is the following:

"Elizabeth Caraway Smith was the sister of Henry Caraway of Craven Cty, Dobbs, and Wayne counties, NC. He is my great Grandfather, so I have studied this collateral branch extensively because they have a very interesting, though tragic history. John Carroway, Aaron I, and Aaron II were officers in the Rev. War. July 1, 1776 Aaron I, Elizabeth Carraway Smith, 3-5 younger children and their male slaves were massacred by the Tories and Cherokee Indians at their home in old Nintynine District of South Carolina. Some day I hope to get up the inspiration to write up their story." Unfortunately Dr. Caraway died in 1974 and far as anyone knows he never wrote the story.

Deaths from old GA newspapers prove that Elizabeth, Aaron I, a son and a daughter were killed by Indians in SC. Four sons and a daughter escaped with their lives. (Researcher Mrs. Thelma Landrum)

NOTES FROM ARTHUR K. SMITH
Capatain Aaron Smith was born in 1720 near the Virginia-NC line and near the coast. He married Elizabeth Carraway born in 1726 in 1741/1742 either in Albemarle County, Virginia or in Craven County, NC. The first land record that I have seen on Capt. Aaron is his presence as a witness to a 1743 deed from Rice Price in Craven county, NC on the North shore of the Neuse River in what is now Pamlico County, NC.

In 1747 he was granted land in Johnson County. The location was on the Neuse River at the mouth of Carraway Creek near Goldsboro, NC. In the 1750's he was accumulating land on the PeeD ee River in Anson County, NC. About 1762 he sold his land on the Pee Dee and moved to SC where he was a planter and slave owner. He had a tavern in the back country of the 96 District near the Cherokee lands.

On July 1, 1776 Aaron Smith, his wife, five of his children, and five male slaves were massacred at their home by Cherokee Indians. Two sons escaped by swimming the river. His children who survived were -
Ezekiel born 1742 Craven County married Laurana Phelps in 1762. John Carraway Smith born 1751 in NC died 18 Mar 1800 in Savannah, Ga.   Notes for AARON SMITH:
Aaron Smith was commissioned a First Lieutenant on 18 March 1779, probably a Capt, Uriah Goodwyn's Co. in the S.C. 3rd Reg't, where he continued to serve until the close of the war or the disbanding of the regiment. In October of 1780, at a meeting of a group of officers of the SC line in Philadelphia, it seems the much-reduced post-war Army was being regrouped and reorganized, and Aaron Smith was appointed to serve in the 2nd SC Regiment. The last mention of him is in the 1785-86 receipt issued for his donation of one month's pay to the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization formed by and for Continental Army officers in 1783. Living then on the frontier of the state, his father and mother, a brother and a sister were killed by the Indians, three brothers, and one sister and himself made their escape, and though then very young, he immediately took an active and successful part in subduing those savage enemies. Afterwards he was promoted to a respectable commission and distinguished himself until the close of the war as an officer and a soldier. In the death of this amiable man, his family, relations, friends and neighbors and have met with an irreparable loss. For many years he was a member and a deacon in the Baptist Church.
