Biography:
Clark Kessinger is considered one of the greatest Old-Time fiddlers. With guitar backing from his nephew, Luke, and recording as the Kessinger Brothers, he made some 70 sides on the Brunswick and Vocalion labels between 1928 and 1930. Born across the Kanawha River from Charleston, Clark came from a family of fiddlers and was reared there and in rural Lincoln County. According to the best available information, he became interested in the fiddle and by age 5 had sufficiently mastered the instrument and made several dollars nightly in tips at a local saloon. At 10, Clark played regularly for local dances. He learned tunes from older area fiddlers such as George Dillon, Bob and Abe Glen, and the legendary Blind Ed Haley. After serving in the Army during WWI, Clark commenced playing with guitar backup furnished by his nephew Luke, son of Clark’s older brother, Charlie Kessinger. They were an early act on WOBU radio in Charleston (as was Billy Cox) and through a local violin teacher named Richmond Huston they received an opportunity to record with Brunswick. The Kessingers did 14 numbers at the first session for Brunswick at Ashland, Kentucky, in February 1928. James O’Keefe, the company talent scout, named them the Kessinger Brothers for the artist credit on the labels. Several of their tunes such as, Turkey In The Straw, Wednesday Night Waltz and Kanawha March, rank among the better-selling items in the Brunswick, "Songs from Dixie," series. Over the next two years, the Kessinger Brothers made trips to New York, playing both well-known and obscure tunes on disc. Clark meanwhile continued to fiddle on local radio and in contests, sometimes competing with other nationally-known fiddlers, including Eck Robertson, Bert Layne, Clayton McMichen and Natchee the Indian (Lester Vernon Storer). During much of this time, Clark earned his principal livelihood as a caretaker and chauffeur for an affluent Charlestonian named Harrison Smith, who helped introduce him to such classical violinists as Fritz Kreisler, who once gave a concert in Charleston. The Great Depression ended Clark’s recording career for a third of a century and after his nephew’s death, he worked less often, but continued to sometimes work at a dance or a club in the vicinity of Charleston. He earned his primary living at a variety of jobs, but mostly as an interior house painter. In 1964, Ken Davidson, an Old-Time music fan and aspiring record company owner, found the 68-year old Kessinger fiddling at a club in Hurricane, Virginia, and induced him to get back into music in a serious way. Clark soon won a fiddling contest in Pulaski, Virginia, and followed it up with other impressive showings at Galax, Virginia; Union Grove, North Carolina; Weiser, Idaho; and Pomeroy, Ohio, among other places. Davidson collected enough material for four albums on his Kanawha label and Rounder recorded a fifth. Clark encored on his Grand Ole Opry guest spot, backed by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Always a congenial showman, the aging fiddler enjoyed his revived career until suffering a stroke in July 1971 which effectively ended his comeback. He recovered somewhat, but never sufficiently to fiddle again. After Kanawha closed up shop, Folkways kept one of Clark’s Kanawha albums in print for some years and County did the same with two others. Both Kanawha and re-issued albums each of which contain a dozen numbers from Kessinger Brothers originals. In recent years, a young kinsman of Clark, Ronin Kessinger of Mason County, West Virginia, has emerged as a widely respected flat-top guitar picker.

ERLIE MAE PAULEY:
To find Mrs. Keeney's grave. Enter the cemetery thru the double gate. Look straight ahead and you will see an "alley". Go thru the alley to the end of the last chain link fence. (There are many family plots with chain link fences around them). At the end of the last chain link fence look ahead about 35 feet to the left. You will see a concrete wall about 30 inches high. The plot that is elevated by the wall is the Keeney plot. She is buried in that plot.

Witcher Creek is East of Charleston on US 60 near town of Belle. Its a hollow up a creek. I do know that there is a good size cemetery up near the head of hollow.
