The most amazing thing found is my grandfather's death certificate. Andrew Engen left Norway and came to America sometime around 1889 and my grandmother, Karen Stene came in August 1890 with their two small daughters, Randi and Ragna. They lived in Ishpeming, Michigan were my Aunt Marion and my mother, Olga were born. When my mother was a toddler, her father went to Wisconsin to find work. He wrote home several times and the last letter said he was coming home. He never was heard from again. There was a lot of speculation in our family about what happened to him. In 2005 I found a database on Ancestry.com that had a death record with his name on it. The only information given was the name, date of death, May 1897, and the county of death, Bayfield, Wisconsin. The date and the place were both significant to me so I sent for the death certificate to see if it could possibly be him. When it came, what it didn't say was just as significant as what it did say. Since he was traveling alone, the person providing the information only knew that he was from Norway and listed his age as 40. I believe that was a round figure guess. He was 34. He died of pneumonia and was buried in the Village Cemetery which was probably the pauper's grave section of the only cemetery there. The museum in Washburn shows that around 1900 there was a dock in the harbor where passenger ships went out into the bay that opened into Lake Superior. I believe he was going to get on a boat and return to Ishpeming, but he got sick and died. What are the odds that this could be anyone else but him?

NORWEGIAN NAMING CUSTOMS
It was the custom prior to the 20th century for Norwegians to assume the surname of the farm where they lived. Therefore, if they moved to a different farm, the surname changed and often almost every generation. Their name consisted of a given name, a patronym (i.e. Henriksson, Olsen etc.) and a farm name. When they came to America, sometimes they used their patronym for a surname and sometimes they changed it altogether. My grandfather, Mike Hall, was born Mikkel Henriksson Fossmo. For the purpose of this genealogy, the name they were born with was used and the name they assumed in adulthood is listed as an A.K.A. name.

Much of the information in thse files have been researched on census and other data bases on the internet. Some of the connections made could include some mistakes. Research done by other genealogists who posted their information on the internet is also included and needs to be verified accordingly. If you discover mistakes or omissions, please contact me by email.

My Family History consists of all the known descendants and ancestors of our great-grandparents. Three of the reports at the end of this page are for the families of the spouses of our children: Georgia Dee (Westerman) Overfield; Roy Perry Theriot and David Brooks Banks. The fourth report is all the known descendants of Ole Aune and Marit Ressel. Two of their children died young. A third child was my great-grandmother, Gjertru (Ressel-Kusaeter)Fossmo. Her brother was Ole (Kusaeter) Saether, who was responsible for sending my grandfather, Michael Hall and his brothers, Andrew Hall and Ole Fosmoe to America.
