2. WHITMAN HILL2 OWENS (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1794 in Sumpter Co, S. C.?, and died 3 Jan 1873 in Abbeville,Henry,Al5. He married ELIAZBETH ANN HARE, daughter of EDMOND HARE and MARY SCOTT.

Notes for WHITMAN HILL OWENS:

1. Much of the information is provided by or substantiated by the Owens
Bible Record in possession of Mary Haygood Owens of Abbeville, Henry Co., Al
It states that Whitman's middle int "H is for HILL, and that he was b. Spartenburg Dist., S. C.

2. Children were born in Sumter Co. S. C.

3. Death notice Henry Co. Register; Abbeville, Henry,Al "Col. W. H. Owens age about 79 years died at the residence of his son Judge H. E. Owens in Abbeville.

4. I believe this is the same Whitman Owens listed in HISTORY OF DECATUR
CO, GA , by Frank S. Jones Gen 975.8993 J, where it is noted on page 299 that: " On Nov 13, 1824 The General Assembly passed legislation appointing Whitman Owens; Simon Shepherd; Thomas Johnson and others as TRUSTEES of the new ACADEMY OF DECATUR COUNTY. On Dec 19, 1829 legislation passed empowering Whitman Owens; Alexander McGowan; William Whiddon and others as COMMISSIONERS to operate the Academy, fix its location and fill vacancies on the board.

5. I believe this is the same Whitman Owens(of Georgia) listed in Florida Land
Records of Tallahassee and Newnansville General Land Office 1825-1892, p207 which lists the following land transactions: #'s5270; 5271 ;5272 ;5274; 5275; 5914 each of which described apparently adjacent large tracts of land located " 8mi N by W Haywood, Jackson Co. Fl. transferred to Hastings E.
Owens April 26, 1848, owner being then located in Barbour Co, Al."

6. I believe this is also the same Whitman Owens listed in the above book by
Frank Jones wherein he is listed in the 1824 Dec. Co. Tax Digest Capt. Carson's district.

7. Whitman H. Owens listed on p104 of book "Whites Among The Cherekees"
Gen Ref: 975.8 W "Surveyors elected by each Ga. Co. to divide the Cherekee
Land into lots to b e distributed in the 1832 Land & Gold Lottery" He surveyed
District 4; section 3.

8. Listed as Whitmon Owens in Fed Cen 1830, Decatur Co, Ga Dist 18.

9. Listed as W. H. Owens in Fed Cen 1840, Decatur Co. Ga p.014 dist 635.

" In a book "Decatur Co, Ga,; EARLY MARRIAGE RECORDS & ABSTRACTS
OF EARLY WILLS OF GA PIONEERS" Gen Ref 975.899 G , Ft. Worth Lib., I
found a listing of DECATUR CO, GA GOLD AND LOTTERY DRAWS which
notes: "William Owens, Sr. of Capt. Gibson's District- 2 gold draws" also:
Lott Owens, and Etheldred Owens."

1. Listed as William M. Owens Fed Cen; Decatur Co,Ga. 1830 p18.

1a. Listed as William M. Owens Fed Cen; Decatur Co. Ga 1840 p15,dist 635.

2. Moved to Florida side of Chattahoochee River soon after 1840.

3. 1850 Fed Census Jackson Co.,Fl. page 293, lists William M. of S. C.
as age 45 which is consistent with 1806 birthdate; Also lists children;
William E (16);John(14); Whitman D. (4); Sara Ellen (2); Eliza (8);
2 others I could not read.

4. William M. and Nancy are now buried in the Owens Cemetary north of
Sneads, Jackson, Fl. Behind the old Methodist Church accross from the
old homestead. Clara Sneads Owens told me while on a tour of the old
graveyard that "I never heard of them, but somebody in the last few years
put these markers in here." That was about 1990.

5. Info on William M. Owens Headstone reads: died 27 Mar 1859 age 53.
Info on Nancy's Headstone reads: Nancy Owens died 25 Feb1867 age 51.

"Dieztron" is not listed. However family info passed down to me lists a
"Dieztron " born april 16, 1844---same birth year as "Dicey Ann"

Could it be that there is no Dieztron ( I have been unable to find any ref to him)
Could it be "Dieztron" is a mis reading of " Dicey Ann"
