* Crowley Ridge, also known as Crowleys Ridge, is a geological ridge running northeast / southwest through several Arkansas counties including Greene. The USGS map website gives its variant name as God Almighty's Levee. Today, there's a state park in Greene Co. on this ridge. The populated place in Greene Co. known today simply as Crowley may have been known as Crowley Ridge in the 19th century.
"WILLIAM BARNETT's father d. about 1825-30 and WILLIAM rode a horse to the SANDERS home in Maury Co. Tenn. (they must have been friends or distant relatives). So WM. went with the SANDERS to Ill. and back to Tenn. and Ark. and married the SANDERS youngest daughter in Ark. abt. 1844 and they took up land north of Norwood. I have the original Patents to the land issued to him in 1851 and 1855 signed by Franklin Pierce. WILLIAM BARNETT accumulated several farms on the rocky hillsides of the Ozarks and reared his family to shun LIKE POISON all dancing, horse-racing and gambling. They were southern Baptists. His son, my grandfather, in addition to operating a blacksmith shop made coffins, beautifully padded and lined with velvet. He also taught singing schools and penmanship!
"Our greatest genealogist puzzle: the ancestors of WILLIAM BARNETT." --author not stated; probably Gertrude Cleghorn Josserand (1896-1982), a granddaughter of John Forrest BARNETT and Emily Susan GIDEON of Lindsay, CA. John Forrest was a son of William BARNETT and Margaret Jane SANDERS. Dawna Lynn Frisk notes that Gertrude, dau. of Ida Barnett Cleghorn (1878-1955), did a lot of research on the Barnett family.
