ILLIAM HOUSTON, JR:
Source Marshall Co, TN Historical Quarterly 161. XX Fall 1989 No. 111. "The Houston Family" researched and written by Donald C. Jeter.
"William and Elizabeth lived on the Houston Plantation now owned by Dr. Cyrus Houston of Concord. The plantation is often spoken of as 'The Frank Houston Place'. The residence is located on the Davis Gold Mine Road, about 7 1/2 miles West of Monroe. A rather large two-story residence is still standing, the main part of which was built of logs. It was probably erected about 1810 since William and Elizabeth married 15 Jun 1809."
"In the yard of this Houston place there still stands a small one-room dwelling which was the home of Wiley and Molissa Houston who were slaves belonging to Milliam Houston. Wiley and Lissa are buried in the McWhorter Cemetery."
"In addition to his farming operations, William Houston operated a tannery and shoe shop, in which hides from the surrounding community were tanned and from which shoes were made by hand. In 1870 William Houston willed this tannery and shoe shop to his sons, James and Benjamin Franklin Houston, to be jointly operated by them as a tannery business. James Houston seems to have assumed most of the duties and responsibilities of the tannery, and became known to his friends as 'Tanner James Houston.' The tanyard was located about 300 yards west from the Houston residence."
"At the home of William Houston there was operated in the early days a rural post-office known as Oakville. The early mail was carried to this point on horseback from such points as Monroe and Charlotte, and the neighbors themselves called for their meager mail. Generally it had been in transit for several days or even weeks."
