Currently is Associate Vice President of Government Relations for the University of South Florida and is very active in lobbying at Tallahassee and Washington DC.
Divorced after about 5 years of marriage. No children.

Anthony Barcena, aka Antonico, Tony, Nico, was a heavy set man, short in stature but heavy and muscular. A typical merchant seaman who loved his wine, women and song. When in Tampa he hung out in a small Spanish cafe in Ybor City drinking beer with his friends. Tony had a lot of friends, he was always in a jovial mood. On a merchant cruise while stopped at a port town of Cien Fuegos Cuba, Tony was with fellow seaman drinking at a local pub. It was time to go back aboard ship, The ship was ready to sail. His drinking buddies, and fellow seaman called to Tony, "come on, it's time to go!" "I'll be right there" he replied; He left shortly after the others, a bit drunk, and in a big hurry. Tony arrived at the dock just as the ship pulled away. A heavy man, Tony was definitely not in the best of condition, nevertheless he jumped from the dock hoping to get a foothold on the departing ship. He didn't make it. Tony plummeted straight down into the dark water below. As Tony struggled to keep his head above the water, the crew ran for ropes, and did their best to rescue their shipmate. Tony was between the hull of the ship and the pilings. A sudden wave sent the ship against the pilings, and poor Tony was crushed between the pilings and the hull. Tony died instantly.

"In Tampa, Tony's mother, my grandmother, was in a happy mood, singing with the music of a local Spanish broadcast from a local station. Suddenly the words she heard were deafening. "WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM TO BRING YOU A MESSAGE" That is how Severa Gonzalez of Tampa Florida learned that her son had been killed in an accident in Cuba. Severa never got over this terrible shock. When she heard this broadcast she ran into the streets of Ybor, screaming like one who had lost her mind, "My son is dead, My son is dead". After that those who knew her could see that the beautiful smile she always had, was now faded, She was never the same person again." [Source: Evelio Pete Barcena]
