The Name of Sicily

-Sicily is divided into three basic sections: west, central and east.

WEST:

-consists of the provinces of:

1. Palermo
2. Trapani
3. Agrigento

CENTRAL:

-consists of the provinces of:

1. Enna
2. Caltanissetta
3. Ragusa

EAST:

-consists of the provinces of:

1. Messina
2. Catania
3. Syracuse

HISTORY:

-From ancient times, Sicily has been known as Trinacria because of its triangular shape.

SYMBOL:

-Its symbol consists of three human legs, bent, extending from a gorgon's head, which is adorned with inter-twined snakes.

The three legs represent the corners of the island:

• Peloros (northeast)
• Pachinos (southeast)
• Eryx (northwest)

-The trinacria made its appearance on Syracusan coins in the 4th cen BC.

-When the Sicani came to the island, the island took the name "Sicania". Then, the Siculi invaded the island, and "Sicania" became "Siculia" ("Sikelia" in Greek), which became "Sicily" and has remained that name since.
