Descendants of Samuel McDonald

1. SAMUEL¹ MCDONALD was born 1776 in South Carolina. He married ELIZABETH JORDAN GOODSON. She was born in South Carolina, and died April 1850.

Notes for SAMUEL MCDONALD:
Samuel McDonald was in Columbia County, Georgia in 1806. He owned 31 1/4 acres on Keg Creek beteen Capt. Harbert Avery and David Roberts. There was also a William and Stephen McDonald. This was a very Baptist area at the time. His father may have been Alexander McDonald, later of Jasper Co. This was apparently the patriarch of the McDonalds: there was a large land grant dated September 9, 1784 in Columbia Co. in the names of Alexander McDaniel, Mary McDaniel and Darling McDaniel (letter of Gay Kennedy, March 11, 1998). A McDonald and McDonell are variations of the same surname, both Scottish
Patronymic names derived from the Gaelic -- Mac Dhamhnuill , which means 'son of Domhnall ,' a given name from the Gaelic elements dubno =world + val =rule. Other ariations are McDonnell, McDonaill, McDonall , and McDaniel. Our McDonalds came from the Isle of Skye to the Carolinas.
Samuel McDonald of Baldwin County (Marshalls District) drew land in Early County in the 1820 Land Lottery, and a Samuel (or is this Alexander) McDonald of Elbert Co. drew land in the 1821 lottery in Fayette Co., occupying the land in 1824. He sold some acreage in that year to William Ward. His name(or that of his son) was drawn for jury duty there in 1836. Seaborn, his son was also in Fayette at the time; he moved to Carroll Co., Ga., and Randolph Co., Ala. An Alexander born between 1790 and 1795 may have been another son. In 1837 he received land in Randolph Co., Ala. (S 11 T18 R12). In 1838 he sold some land in Carroll Co. to Stephen Proctor, and in 1841 more land there to his son Seaborn. In 1852 he bought land in Randolph Co. from Sterling Camp (S 18 T18 R13).
