James Cooper was a plantation owner on the south side of the James River in Surry Co., Va., parish of Southwark. He raised and sold tobacco to Benjamin Harrison and other factors. He made his will Feb. 28, 1729/30 when he fell ill, died around October 1734, and it was probated by the court November 20, 1734. At that time Surry Co. stretched 100 miles southwestwardly and formed the western frontier of the James River colony. The Occaneechi trading path began here and eventually wound its way to the Yadkin and New Rivers in North Carolina, from there to Cherokee country.

Notes for E
LIZABETH CANNON:
Elizabeth was executrix of her husband James Cooper's estate in Surry County, Virginia, 1734-38. She sold land to Thomas Allstin, paid his creditors and liquidated his estate with a positive balance of 54 lbs. 10 shillings 11 1/2 pence. She made her mark as I.E., not as a cross, suggesting she might not have been Christian but Jewish. Some researchers say she was Elizabeth Kelley, also given as the wife of Benjamin Cooper of Philadelphia, but this is evidently mistaken. She may have married James Massingale after her husband's death. She may only have been the mother of Thomas Cooper, the others (John, Francis, William and ) being James's children by an older wife.
