Family Roots: Ransom Ladd and Related Families

Ransom Ladd was born in South Carolina, March 19, 1807; he died in Stoddard Co., MO, September 30, 1865. The first printed record we have is in the Wayne Co., MO, federal census of 1830. He is listed with his wife, Anna Eve Norman and one son who was Asa Valentine Ladd. Family lore tells us that Ransom was orphaned as a young child. His family was moving west on a boat in the Mississippi River. When his family became ill, all of them died but Ransom. Supposedly, he was raised by the Sagamore Indians who lived in the area that is now Dexter, MO.
When Ransom became a man, the Indians would come to borrow his "rifle gun." When they returned the rifle, it would have silver decorations added to the stock as a "thank you." The silver decorations were removed and used to decorate the walking stick of his youngest son, Robert Ladd, b. 1863, d. 1948. Ransom was an itinerant pastor of the Methodist Church as well as a farmer. Who were his parents? Others: Norman, Gaines, Davis, Satterfield, Henry
