Descendants of Abraham Howey of Oxford, Sussex, New Jersey
| The Howey families of North America were present in New Jersey and Pennsylvania by the 1730s. Some researchers believe the earliest to arrive were Howies from Scotland, transported to the colonies because as Presbyterian Covenanters they refused to take the oath of allegiance to the English King. Other researchers believe that the first Howeys came from Northern Ireland as part of the migration of Scots from Ulster to America to enjoy religious freedom and to have land of their own. Regardless of where they came from the Howeys have flourished in America. Many branches of the family exist in the United States and Canada, many of them descended from the early settlers in Western New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.
