Notes for John Jacob, Jr., Slagle: John Jacob Slagle, Jr., apparently went from York county, Pennsylvania to settle among the Germans in Fredrick, Maryland. Either here or in Washington County, he married Hannah Burrell, daughter of Francis Burrell. Their neighbors were the Monnetts and Pittengers with whom his children intermarried. Jacob must have accumulated some means because as he moved farther west he became the owner of a large amount of land in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia. His first purchase was from Thomas Cresap, from whom Cresaptown, outside of Cumberland, was named, on August 9, 1777. Thereafter he added to this with additional purchases, all just east of Cumberland, where the Potomac River runs north and south for a short distance. On a hill facing west across the Potomac, Jacob built a large house of hand hewn timbers and hand made brick. A few miles to the west, and also on the Virginia side of the Potomac, was the residence of Abraham Monnett. This was the family into which several of Jacob's sons and daughters married. Of interest also is the fact that one of the daughters of Jacob and Hannah Slagle, Anastatia, married Thomas Edmundson, born January 16, 1816. There daughter, Hannah Edmundson, became Jacob Putnam Daniels (RIN 1326) first wife on January 30, 1836. The will of Jacob Slagler, spelled with a 'r' at the end, prepared November 29, 1800, and presented to the court on December 15, 1800, lists his wife as Hannah. Seven children: 1-John 4-Statia 2-Jacob 5- Elenor 3-Joseph 6-Ales 7-Amy Also named: Asa and Jesse Mounts, Michael Collier, James Martin, John O'Hara. Exec. Joseph and Col. Moses Rawlings.Sec. Alex King, Andrew Wodand and Col Moses Rawlings, Alex King, George Fouke.
A will written February 8, 1782 and presented to the court December 12, 1782 for a Conrad Slagle, Hamp. Co. lists no wife, five children. This would have been a time frame for John Jacob's father. How can John Jacob be a Junior if his father was Christopher Schegle or if Conrad was if father. Yet, Mr. Doll says John's father was Christopher and his mother, Hannah. Conrad's children was: 1-John, left to Adam Couchman to learn trade; 2-Christina (to John Yoakum); 3-Jacob; 4-Elizabeth; 5-'a young daughter;" Named are Gohn Giling. Exec. Daniel Teverbaugh; Sec. Henry Sheplar; Wit. Edward Purcell; Henry Shepar, Thomas Longwith.
On October 15, 1816 John Lefever, assignee of Michael C. Sprigg and Joseph Sprigg ? of ? Sprigg, dec'd against Thomas Edmiston and John Slage, Hampshire Count, VA. Source:Common Law Order Bk, P5. In the special census of Hampshire County in 1784, Jacob Slagele is listed with 10 free whites, 1 dwelling and 1 other building.
