Aaron Charles Brown was using the name Charles A Brown as quoted by the 1900 census. He also used the nickname Chas. In legal documents, concerning the petition of his USA pension from the war of 1864, he was accused of using an alias, so he could not be found. Reason being he had moved from Livingston County, Michigan, leaving a wife, 5 kids and Lillie on the way about 1884. He had not divorced his first wife Clara which was a terrible thing. He presented himself as single man, never having been married, to Sarah Louisa Kitchen whom he later married in 1890. They married in Hamilton but moved to Puslinch where they lived in a log cabin. Either next door to Alexander Kerr (who was married to Sarah's sister Alice) or the cabin was located on the property owned by Alexander Kerr who at that time also lived in a log cabin before he built a two story stone house. The property which I have visited looks like about 5 acres. They also lived in Freelton where my grandfather was born.
A newspaper clipping stated that Aaron Charles Brown died yesterday at the family home, on No. 1 Joe Street in St Catharines at the age of 69. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 o'clock to Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Brown leaves a widow, Sarah Louisa Brown, and five sons. Three of these sons are at the front (WW1) Pte. Charles H., Sergt. Harold H., and Pt. Arthur L. with two at home, Eugene C and Herman R.
When Aaron died in 1917, of course, Sarah got his Civil War Pension. Clara contested the pension in 1933, copy is not good. After much legal battle, she was refused the pension by the USA government. Forty odd years had passed since Aaron left her, even though they were never divorced, she still did not get it. Today, it would be a different story. I think they should have given it to her, she must have suffered greatly, a women whose husband left her with 6 children to raise and very limited means of income. I don't know how she did it.
