When I first set out to explore my family's genealogy I thought I would merely be exploring and hopefully expanding on the information which had previously been gathered by my great, great grandmother, Hester Ann (Morrow) Anderson, taken up by my great grandmother, Olive Etoil (Anderson) Parker, who, also, started gathering and adding information on the Parker family and then taken up by my grandfather, John Clyde Parker. I had hopes of adding the story of my mother's ancestors which was steeped in mystery. What I have uncovered, mostly with the help of many wonderful people, is a wonderful compilation of a family which has some of its roots in early Colonial American history. Some of the words you will read in here are the original words of the authors who first compiled some of this information and who contributed it to the World Family Tree. Their names are unknown to me but their work is valued. Along the way I have encountered hopeful new connections only to have them shot down when I did further research. A couple of months ago I purchased a book entitled "Descendants of Roger Parke, Immigrant, 1648-1739" written by Cecelia B. Parke, copyright 2000 in which all the persons in the book are relatives, far to many to add to the file I have on the family.
Some exciting new information on my ancestry is the addition of the Stout family name going back particulary to Richard and Penelope (Kent) Stout who resided in the colonies when New York was still New Amsterdam and who became some of the founders of early New Jersey settlements. Penelope's story is a tribute to the courage of women in the New World, her endurance and stamina caused her to have, a source relates, 502 descendants born before her death at the age of 110 years. Through them comes a connection to the Pike family which includes the revolutionary soldier Zebulon Pike and his son, Zebulon Montgomery Pike, for whom Pike's Peak was named. Another book I recently purchased entitled "Ancestors and Descendants of Lewis Ross Freeman with related families" compiled by Patty Barthell Myers, copyright 1995 which I purchased when I thought we had many relationships with the Freeman family turned out to only prove that the connection I believed I had discovered did not exist; but, as Patty related to me by e-mail, it is just as important to disprove a genealogical connection as it is to prove it. It is a beautifully published book with photos and newspaper articles and full of historical information which did, in the long run, help me confirm some of the findings I had made.
Probably the biggest find for me, however, was the information on my mother's side of the family; the Butchers. Mom never seemed to know much about her ancestors beyond her grandparents and for years one of my brothers and I searched and searched for information until he discovered a cousin, Lola Faye Butcher Given, who had done most of the preliminary work on the line through access she had to several old Family Bibles. Without her invaluable research we might yet be groping around to find out the little we now know; thanks Lola!
